Urbanization is a world wide phenomenon. Vegetated areas get replaced by dark coloured buildings and increase the heat storage capacity dramatically. Additionally, the human body is vulnerable to heat events which will occur more regularly in the future because of climate change. There are many mitigation strategies that try to adapt the existing infrastructure to the possible natural hazards. One option would be to increase the reflection of solar radiation on surfaces. But is this the most effective way to reduce heat in cities? Or could green roofs have a greater cooling effect on buildings?

In Kenia am Lake Naivasha werden zwei Drittel aller verkauften Rosen in Deutschland produziert. Die Region um den Naivashasee bietet zwar mehrere Standortvorteile, birgt allerdings auch einige Schattenseiten. Der Rosenanbau erfolgt unter enormem Wasserverbrauch – in einem Land mit Wasserknappheit. Durch die in den letzten Jahrzehnten drastische Expansion der Blumenfarmen kam es zu einer massiven Verschmutzung des Naivashasees und zu Seespiegelschwankungen. Die dortige Zuwanderung und das prognostizierte starke Bevölkerungswachstum verschärft diese Problematik.

Student teams learn about and devise technical presentations on four reproductive technology topics pregnancy ultrasound, amniocentesis, in-vitro fertilization or labor anesthetics. Each team acts as a panel of engineers asked to make a presentation to a group of students unfamiliar with the reproductive technology. Each group incorporates non-lecture elements into its presentation for greater effectiveness. As students learn about the technologies, by creating a presentation and listening to other groups' presentations, they also learn more about the valuable skill of technical communications.

Our own creations are often the undoing of us and our environment, as the example of plastic pollution in the ocean clearly shows. The ecological, monetary and health consequences of this substance input are already alarming and incalculable. If a business-as-usual approach is followed, the weight of plastic could already exceed that of fish stocks by 2050. In particular, China, as the most populous country, is the largest consumer and producer of plastic and has been considered the dumping ground of the world due to its plastic import-based recycling industry. The future of the plastics industry and management, whether positive or negative, could therefore depend heavily on China.
