This interactive game challenges learners to create eight virtual compounds by combining individual ions. Each challenge poses a task. Task #1 asks students to make sodium chloride by clicking and dragging the correct cation and anion to the workspace. Task #2 is to make a sodium oxide compound; Task #3 -- create sodium hydroxide. If an incorrect ion is chosen, the game provides immediate feedback. The game is part of a larger interactive module on the Periodic Table. <b><i>Editor's Note:</b> This resource provides opportunity for students to construct meaning from the Periodic Table by building models. It helps them build foundations to understand molecular structure and charge interaction in ionic bonding.</i> This resource is part of <i>Annenberg Media</i>, an organization devoted to distributing educational video programs which are accompanied by web and print materials. Each page is supplemented with audio narration and illustrations. Learners will try to fuse or separate elements, giving them insight into the bonding process without introducing advanced vocabulary. This interactive animation explores how negative and positive ions in sodium chloride (table salt) collide with water molecules and become separated from each other to become a solution. The model does an effective job of depicting how the water molecules disrupt the attraction between the positive sodium ions and the negative chloride ions, and then become stabilized by attractions to the atoms in the water molecule. In this case, investigators test the water near an abandoned coal mine in Eastern Kentucky. Although the water appears clean, the demonstration clearly shows that it is too acidic to support life, and will threaten aquatic organisms in a river further downstream.
