This Media and Information Literacy Curriculum for Teachers is an important resource for Member States in their continuing work towards achieving the objectives of the Grünwald Declaration (1982), the Alexandria Declaration (2005) and the UNESCO Paris Agenda (2007) – all related to MIL.This publication is divided into two parts. Part 1 provides the MIL Curriculum and Competency Framework, which gives an overview of the curriculum rationale, design and main themes. It is complementary to the UNESCO ICTs Competency Framework for Teachers (2008). Part 2 includes the detailed Core and Non-Core Modules of the curriculum.

While common usage of the word, text, often refers to written or printed matter, literary and cultural theory extends the term to refer to any coherent set of symbols that transmit meaning to those who know how to read them. In an age where ideas may take many forms and be expressed across different media, texts and reading take on new implications.One goal of the Flows of Reading project is to inspire teachers and students to reflect on what can be considered as reading and what kinds of reading they perform in their everyday lives. Flows of Reading introduces an expanded concept of the term, text, and models a new type of readerĺ䁥ŕone who reads across different media and who understands reading as an activity of sharing, deconstructing, and making meaning.We have created a rich environment designed to encourage close critical engagement not only with Moby-Dick but a range of other texts, including the childrenĺ䁥_s picture book, Flotsam; Harry Potter; Hunger Games; and Lord of the Rings. We want to demonstrate that the bookĺ䁥_s approach can be applied to many different kinds of texts and may revitalize how we teach a diversity of forms of human expression.

New York City middle school teacher Gordon Van Owen involves students in an interesting process of preparing, delivering, and analyzing speeches. Students study selected text from a nursery rhyme as part of their preparation and are then recorded as they recite their script creating a class collection of speeches. The final part of the lesson focuses on having students use a rubric to critically analyze both their peers delivery and their own. Using podcasting as the delivery method allows students to hear themselves and to focus on objective analysis by separating the giving of the speech from the analysis of the speech.
