Blueprint Reading

In this unit I will cover some of the various terms plus have students practice making a couple of basic drawings before digging into BluePrint Reading Basics.

Step 1: I will cover basic lines used in drawings they will use in their own drawings.

Object Line

Hidden Line

Center Line

Extension Line                  Not as Thick as Object Line·

Dimension Line          ?

Step 2: I Talk with class about most common types of views used in drafting. Then I explain that in the United States in the three view drawing we usually use the front view, top view, and right side view.

Step 3: Here is where I introduce the use of Grid paper (do to time limits we don’t use drafting tools – which is taught in drafting class). I use ¼” grid paper. I do make the students include Project Name, Date, Their Name, Scale used.

Step 4: After setting up Grid paper I have students draw various Wooden blocks to scale, That way students will get to use the five different lines in the various blocks. Once student get the basics of drawing, I introduce Blueprint Reading.
