Fixing a Lawnmower

Warm-Up

  • Have the students talk about how they went about fixing a broken piece of machinery, broken tool, broken equipment, etc.
  • Have the students discuss amongst each other the the three main steps they took in order to fix the piece of equipment

Introduction

  • Have the students look at the handout of the exploded diagram and match the circled numbers to those on the handout of the parts list
  • Ask the students to read out loud the description of the parts
  • Ask the students if they had ever done something like this before
  • Ask the students how this relates to the way they have fixed broken equipment before
  • Ask students if this would have helped them in the past, and how it could help them in the future
  • The objective here is to have the students learn how to identify a piece of equipment that needs replacement, and select a few options that will work as a replacement

Presentation/Modeling/Demonstration

  • Show the students the web site that the handouts came from
  • Show the students similar parts in a catalog handout
  • Ask the students to describe what they are looking at
  • Ask the students to describe why there are so many items in the list
  • Ask the students which item they would choose from the list
  • Ask them how they made this decision
  • Ask them why they made this decision
  • Create a poll of several different items, and go around the room with a show of hands of who picked each item
  • Tally up the numbers and ask the students why there are differences in the poll results

Guided Practice

  • Repeat the exercise using the second exploded diagram and parts list
  • Ask the students to match the circled numbers again, and come up with options for replacement using the catalog handouts again
  • Show the students that they are on the right track or on the wrong track

Evaluation

  • Ask one student to write on the board each step they would take and result they obtained in order to fix a specific part of one of the visuals for the equipment
  • Have each student go through once
  • Ask the students to write their thoughts and questions about the process of identifying and selecting on a piece of paper for submission

Application, Closure, Connection

  • Ask the students to write on the same piece of paper how they would fix another piece of machinery in the future, where they would find out the part name/number, where they would look for resources and options to fix the equipment
  • Ask the students to write about a different scenario where this would help them in the future
  • Ask the students to select an inventory item from a list, and look up options for replacement in another catalog handout for store supplies
