Racial discrimination around the world.

Description

Students will be able to talk about racial discrimination around the world with a group presentation at the end of the lesson. They  will have two sessions of 50 minutes each. Students are mainly involved in small group activities.

Student Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to understand the concept of racial discrimination/ segregation and develop their own opinion about it.
  • Students will be able to differentiate between fact and personal opinion when presenting ideas. 

Materials.

1. Warm up:

History of racism in America History of racism in America (if there is no internet access at school or university, the teacher should download the video in advance)

1. While stage:

Internet connection ( laptops, tablets, smart phones etc) 

If there is no internet connection , the teacher should bring copies of the information required for the students to read.

1.1. To create a mind map the following materials will be used: 

Technology: www.realtimeboard.com / www.popplet.com

Non Technology: stick notes, bond paper, etc

1.2. For the stations:

If the students are using paper, they will need markers, colors, pens, etc

 2. Feedback:

The handouts with the rubrics to assess the presentations.


Lesson Plan


Introduction/Warm-up

  1. The students will be shown a video "The History of Racism in America"

      2.Students will be paired up and they will discuss the following questions:               

              a. Do you think the situation of non-white peolpe is still the same in the USA?

             b. Do you know any law or laws that helped end racial disrimination and segregation?

            c. Are there any similar cases in your country?                                                                                                               

Stations

The students will be in groups of  four or five people, then they will choose a topic from the following list:

Racism in Africa

Racism in Asia

Racism in Europe

Racism in the middle east

racism in North America

racism in South America      

                                                                                                                                                                                                In the same group, the students will have about 20-30 minutes to search for information about the selected topic ( using smartphones, tablets or pcs)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         

Note: If you don't have internet connection, bring handouts for your students so that they can work on reading                                                                                  

Students should highlight the main facts and create a mind map to explain the selected topic.                                                                                     There will be four stations and each group will rotate through all of the stations. Each station will take 10 minutes. In each station, students will develop one of the following aspects to create their mind map.                                                                                                                                           

To create the mind map, they can use online resourses such as www.realtimeboard.com, www.popplet.com, or any other they know or they can use paper, too.                                 

They will work on the mind map using the following headings:

Racism in the past

Racism in the present

Comparison between other countries and their own country

How the future will be?                                                       

Each group will have five minutes to present their mind map.                                                       

Extension and/or Differentiation

There will be another station called "the stand alone station". this is for the group of students who will finish fast. In  this station, they will have different activities (such as puzzles, readings, trivia, etc.) that they will work on while the others finish their stations.
