Grade Level: 10-12

Subject: Advanced Child Development

Duration: 3  50 minute periods

DOK Level: 3

Indiana Standard:

ACD-1.4 Apply management, decision-making, and problem solving processes to accomplish

tasks and fulfill responsibilities.

ACD-3.1 Examine physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and moral domains of human

growth and development, ages 4 to 8.

ACD-4.1 Examine roles and responsibilities of the family unit, caregivers, and educators for

nurturing children, providing children with a stimulating environment.

Objective:

Students will investigate the major types of parenting styles used for children ages 4-8. Following their investigation students will construct a demonstration video of a particular style and compare the major components of each.

Essential Questions:

  1.  What contributes to a parent’s choice in parenting styles?
  2.  How does a parent's choice in parenting style contribute to or deter from the child’s  well-being?
  3. What ways can a parent improve upon his/her abilities to parent their child?

Procedure:

  1.  Students will be asked to complete the following Bell Ringer and attempt to link their  parenting choices to potential answers to the essential questions listed above.

Bell Ringer: You are the parent of a 4 year old; you and your child are waiting for your car to be repaired at the WalMart Auto Shop (an emergency repair you had not anticipated today).  Understandably your 4 year old is restless.  You have a piece of paper.  What game could you play? (NOTE:  As the teacher I will hand you a piece of paper and you will attempt to entertain another student who will play the part of a 4 year old.  After four minutes you and your partner will reverse roles)

     2. Students will be asked to discuss their results from the Bell Ringer and brainstorm potential answers to the essential questions.

     3.  Students will be asked to watch the attached video entitled “Four Types  of Parenting Styles”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3g0kKD4txo

Following this short video, discuss the elements of each style and link your formulated thoughts in response to essential question #2.

     4.  Students will be randomly assigned to a group of three and given a particular parenting style from the video.  Each group will determine the following three roles:   parent, child, videographer.  For the remainder of the period and throughout the next period they will be asked to produce an iMovie that depicts parenting an unwanted behavior from a 6 year old child.  Students are encouraged to research behavioral challenges typical of that age in which to develop their video. Scenarios must be approved by the teacher. Students will be assessed according to the rubric below:

     5.  During the third class period students will share their iMovie and critique the parenting styles in each scenario linking their formulated responses to essential question #3.

Product or Assessment: An iMovie that depicts the assigned parenting style administered to a 6 year old child who is demonstrating an unwanted behavior.  The iMovie will be evaluated using the rubric above.

Accommodations: Students may perform the scenario without videotaping.  Students may demonstrate the scenario through other video apps.

Enrichment: Students may research parenting styles in different countries.  Students may research how parenting styles have changed throughout past generations within the United States and analyze why changes take place.
