Materials: Word reading sheet, letter tiles, scissors, teacher check-off list

Procedure:

Initiation: First, I will connect today’s lesson of oi and oy to the vowel teams we studied recently.  I will write mouth and how on the board. I will ask the students “What do you know about reading these words?” The students will tell me that the vowels ou and ow can stand for the sound of /ou/.

Next, I will display some pictures of items that have the /oi/ sound.  I will show the written words under the pictures. I will name each picture and connect it to oi, oy.

“This is ________________.  The letter (oi or oy) stand for the sound /oi/ in _______________.  Listen as I blend this word.”

I will continue this process through each of the words.

Development:

Part I (reading oi, oy words)

Next, the students will get the opportunity to read some words together as a class and then as an individual.

  • I will write boil on the board and say “The letters oi stand for the sound /oi/ in boil.  Listen as I blend the word. /boil/.  Now, let’s blend this word together /boil/.
  • I will write boy on the board and complete the same process as with boil.
  • Now, the students will practice blending sounds across the words
      • point
      • royal
      • coin
      • toy
      • moist
      • destroy
      • foil
  • After the students have blended the words together as a group, I will call on individuals to blend the following words: coil, join, soil, voyage, joint, voice, oil, joy, decoy.  Before they read the word, I will ask them to tell me about the word (I will be looking for knowledge of oy and oi saying /oi/.
  • Finally, I will review what the students just learned about reading oi and oy words.  “What do you know about reading these words?  The letters oi and oy can stand for the vowel sound /oi/.”

Part II (spelling oi and oy words)

  • I will explain to the class that now we will be building words. First, I will write the word royal on the board and have the students blend it.  Then, I will have the students spell royal with letter tiles.  As we progress, I will walk around the classroom and monitor their work and provide feedback.

Here are the directions:

    • "Drop the al.  What is the new word?" (roy)
    • "Change the r in roy to j.  What is the new word?" (joy)
    • "Drop the y, add in.  What is the new word?" (join)
    • "Add a t to the end.  What is the new word?" (joint)
    • "Drop the j, add a p. What is the new word?" (point)
    • "Drop the p, add ment to the end. What is the new word?" (ointment)

Closing:

The students will receive a word reading page that contains words with oi and oy.  They will be instructed to read the words to themselves three times each.  After they’re done reading the words, they will use them in sentences on the back of the page.

Assessment: As the students are practicing reading the words, walk around and ask students to read part of the list, assessing their ability to read the words. After assessing the students, ask the students to stop writing their sentences and we will read all of the words on the list together.

Additionally, after another lesson on oi and oy, I would give them a spelling test. On the test, I would include 6 words: soil, join, choice, royal, soy and employ.

Measures: Observe the children and listen to them read oi and oy words. Review spelling ability of oi and oy words.
