Put yourself in the graph

2/5/14

Lesson Plan creator: Michelle Tschantre

Grade level: 8th

Time Required: 60 mins

Adapted: 55 mins (one class is 60 min, one class is 50 minutes)

State standards

Math

8.G.1 Verify experimentally the properties of rotations, reflections, and translations:

a. Lines are taken to lines, and line segments to line segments of the same length.

b. Angles are taken to angles of the same measure.

c. Parallel lines are taken to parallel lines.

Statement of objectives

Students will:

•  Verify the different types of transformations

Teacher planning

Move desks to the outside of the room.  Tape off the floor in a grid pattern

Materials

• Tape

Focus and Review (2mins):

What’s different about the classroom today?  (The floor is taped like a grid)  Right! And we will be seeing more in-depth about transformations.

Teacher Input (10min):

I want you to label what each definition is on the board.

(On the board:

• Moves the object so that every point of the object moves in the same direction as well as the same distance. (Translation)

• Flips an object over the line of reflection (Reflection)

• Spins the figure around a fixed point known as the center of rotation.  (Rotation)

• Enlarge or reduce the size of a figure by the scale factor.  (Dilation)

Guided Practice (30min):

I need (enter name) to stand on point (1,2).  You are now going to dilate yourself.  Kneel down – still the same person, but smaller.  You have now just dilated.  (enter name) stand at point (-1,2).  Now move to (-2, 4).  You are still the same size and person, you just moved, and translated yourself.  (enter name)  Stand at point (3,2).  Now move backward in a circle so that you are facing the back of the classroom to point (-3,2).  You are still the same size and person, you just moved, and reflected yourself across the y-axis.  Finally (enter name)  stand at (-3,-1) and turn in a circle.  You are still the same size and person, you just turned, and rotated yourself.  If you all want to test this out for a bit you can or we can move onto our next assignment.

Independent Practice (10min):

I want you to work with your classmates to solve the next few questions.  Use the graph on the floor to help you if you need.

Closure (3 min):

I need each one of me to show a transformation using yourself on our class floor graph.
