Students are introduced to the classification of animals and animal interactions. Students also learn why engineers need to know about animals and how they use that knowledge to design technologies that help other animals and/or humans. This lesson is part of a series of six lessons in which students use their growing understanding of various environments and the engineering design process, to design and create their own model biodome ecosystems.

Short Description: This book was created for an undergraduate Introduction to Industrial Engineering course at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). The chapters give an overview of the profession and an introduction to some of the tools used by industrial engineers in industry. There are interactive content exercises included at the end of most chapters. This interactive content aims to engage students in the content as they are reading. The book will continue to revised and updated with new information as it becomes necessary. More interactive content will be added to the end of each chapter in future versions of the book.

This PowerPoint is a generic description of the Engineering Design Process that walks students through the 6 step process that works in a continual loop of defining the problem, generate concepts, develop a solution, construct and test a prototype, evaluate a solution, and present a solution. This PowerPoint offers stopping points to encourage question and answer sessions as well as discussion opportunities if teachers choose to relate it to a particular problem. It was originally posted and authored by Alexandrea Dunkelberger.

This class is one of the core requirements for the Environmental Masters of Engineering program. It is designed to teach about environmental engineering through the use of case studies, computer software tools, and seminars from industrial experts. Case studies provide the basis for group projects as well as individual theses. Past case studies have included the MMR Superfund site on Cape Cod; restoration of the Florida Everglades; dredging of Boston Harbor; local watershed trading programs; appropriate wastewater treatment technology for Brazil; point-of-use water treatment for Nepal, Brownfields Development in Providence, RI, and water resource planning for the island of Cyprus. This class spans the entire academic year: students must register for the Fall term, IAP, and the Spring term.

The lesson begins by introducing Olympics as the unit theme. The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to the techniques of engineering problem solving. Specific techniques covered in the lesson include brainstorming and the engineering design process. The importance of thinking out of the box is also stressed to show that while some tasks seem impossible, they can be done. This introduction includes a discussion of the engineering required to build grand, often complex, Olympic event centers.

In Basic Engineering Data Collection and Analysis, Stephen B. Vardeman and J. Marcus Jobe stress the practical over the theoretical. Step by step, students get real engineering data and scenario examples along with chapter-long case studies that illustrate concepts in realistic, thoroughly detailed situations. This approach encourages students to work through the material by carrying out data collection and analysis projects from problem formulation through the preparation of professional technical reports—just as if they were on the job.
The Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering has concerns about the lack …
The Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering has concerns about the lack of knowledge amongst school pupils, and their teachers, of the type of work undertaken by an Environmental Engineer. The interactive presentation was developed as part of an awareness raising exercise for aspects of Environmental Engineering. Targeted at KS3 pupils particularly in Year 9 (Y9) the themes of air/ soil/water pollution were chosen because of their links to the KS3 National Curriculum for Science ( e.g. unit 9g Environmental Chemistry). The rationale behind the presentation was that visually it must be engaging and provide a clear indication of the consequences of actions but at the same time have questions using appropriate language that provide a basis for extending discussion / teaching beyond students/teachers current experience.
The presentation has been made available through our website and demonstrated at a variety of events where School Teachers meet e.g. 14-19 Conference ( School of Education) and PGCE Science Mentor Meetings ( School of Education).

Students extend their knowledge of the skeletal system to biomedical engineering design, specifically the concept of artificial limbs. Students relate the skeleton as a structural system, focusing on the leg as structural necessity. They learn about the design considerations involved in the creation of artificial limbs, including materials and sensors.

Long Description: The goal of this textbook is to introduce you to the foundational topics of chemical engineering. This textbook will give you a good basic understanding of a number of chemical engineering concepts, which you can take with you as you progress in your engineering degree and career. This book covers the basics of process diagrams, reaction chemistry, phase equilibrium, energy balances, unsteady-state operations, process control, process economics and safety, and green engineering. The book provides basic conceptual information on each topic and allows the readers to test their understanding of each topic through practice examples and exercises. The book pinpoints important concepts and terms for the readers to take note of and even includes a set of flashcards at the end of each chapter, which readers can use to test their general understanding and grasp of the topic. The appendices in the book’s back matter provide readers with additional resources for solving problems and accessing data and information.

Numerous recent studies have shown that the U.S. has relatively low percentages of students who enter science and engineering and a high drop-out rate. Some other countries are producing many more scientists and engineers per capita than the U.S. What does this mean for the future of the U.S. and the global economy? In this readings and discussion-based seminar you will meet weekly with the Dean of Undergraduate Education to explore the kind of education MIT and other institutions are and should be giving. Based on data from National Academy and other reports, along with what pundits have been saying, we'll see if we can decide how much the U.S. may or may not be at risk.
