"Animal health is of utmost importance in the production of milk, meat, and other animal products. Although vitamin supplements can help ensure livestock remain as healthy as possible, they are often expensive, driving up the cost of production. To help reduce these costs, a team of researchers set out to better understand how the essential vitamins B and K₂ are produced by microbes in the gastrointestinal tracts of ruminants, which are animals with complex digestive tracts composed of multiple distinct compartments to help them break down their plant-based diets. The team used genetic data from previous studies to identify 1,135,807 genes and 2366 full genomes involved in B or K₂ vitamin biosynthesis in the gastrointestinal tracts of seven ruminant species. They also found that most of this biosynthesis took place in the stomach compartments rather than other regions and that a high-grain diet enhanced most vitamin biosynthesis but inhibited cobalamin synthesis..."

"Residing in the stomachs of over half the human population, the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, also known as H pylori, has become a major cause of digestive complications, ranging from peptic ulcers to stomach cancer. But despite this link, scientists still aren’t sure how these disorders arise after infection. Now, researchers have homed in on a single protein produced by H pylori that seems to rev up the immune system, causing a state of inflammation that may pave the way for cancer growth or other types of gut breakdown. The protein, HP1454, is naturally released from H pylori -- both actively by living cells and passively as cells die. The scientists found that when special immune cells known as T cells encounter this secreted HP1454, they kick into action, mounting an inflammatory response. This relationship was particularly strong in people with stomach cancer..."

The omasum is the third chamber in the ruminant stomach. It lies within the intrathoracic part of the abdomen so cannot be palpated manually. Instead it is examined by ausculation. The omasum has biphasic contractions which squeeze fluid out of the food before allowing the ingesta to continue into the abomasum. Absorption of volatile fatty acids continues in the omasum.

Mechanical digestion and microbial fermentation occur to breakdown food particles for absorption. Volatile fatty acids are the major product of ruminant digestion.
