The Breathing Student Edition book is one of ten volumes making up the Human Biology curriculum, an interdisciplinary and inquiry-based approach to the study of life science.
Pulse rate can be influenced by many things. In this lab, you will determine what effect holding your breath and exercising have on your pulse rate.
Students explore the inhalation/exhalation process that occurs in the lungs during respiration. Using everyday materials, each student team creates a model pair of lungs.
The students will expand their knowledge of the respiratory system by measuring their respiration rate and their lung capacity.
The students will investigate how muscle fatigue can affect muscle performance of their index finger.
The students will investigate the muscular system by observing and comparing slides of muscles, by observing changes in their arm muscles and by observing their respiration and pulse rate during sitting, walking and running.

"Lung phantoms are dynamic systems that simulate lung motion to predict tumor position for lung radiotherapy These predictions make cancer radiotherapy more precise, as lung tumors move during breathing Unfortunately, current lung motion phantoms don’t account for complex motion and deformation of surrounding organs Now, researchers at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, have developed a lung phantom that can produce complex and irregular motions by using a motion platform with two independently programmable linear actuators The phantom provides reliable measurements of the tumor as well as surrounding organs at risk and can simulate variation in abdominal and thoracic engagement While the new lung phantom can’t fully reproduce human breathing, it comes pretty close It is a valuable tool for evaluating motion management strategies in lung radiotherapy Ranjbar et al. "A novel deformable lung phantom with programably variable external and internal correlation..."

To gain a better understanding of the roles and functions of components of the human respiratory system and our need for clean air, students construct model lungs that include a diaphragm and chest cavity. They see how air moving in and out of the lungs coincides with diaphragm movement. Then student teams design and build a prototype face mask pollution filter. They use their model lungs to evaluate their prototypes to design requirements.
The purpose, components, and functions of the respiratory system are presented in this learning through disussion and visualizations. Participants learn about the nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli.

This video aims to provide an illustrative lesson about the respiratory system in birds and how the adaptations of that system over time have made it different than that of other living creatures, especially mammals. Birds are omnipresent in our lives, and students will come to understand and appreciate the fascinating inner workings of these beautiful creatures. This lesson discusses avian features and differences for 20 to 25 minutes, with approximately 20 minutes of in-class student activities.
