College Algebra is an introductory text for a college algebra survey course. The material is presented at a level intended to prepare students for Calculus while also giving them relevant mathematical skills that can be used in other classes. The authors describe their approach as "Functions First," believing introducing functions first will help students understand new concepts more completely. Each section includes homework exercises, and the answers to most computational questions are included in the text (discussion questions are open-ended).

This lesson unit is intended to help teachers assess how well students are able to understand what the different algebraic forms of a quadratic function reveal about the properties of its graphical representation. In particular, the lesson will help teachers identify and help students who have the following difficulties: understanding how the factored form of the function can identify a graphŐs roots; understanding how the completed square form of the function can identify a graphŐs maximum or minimum point; and understanding how the standard form of the function can identify a graphŐs intercept.

In this seminar you will learn how to graph quadratic functions and how to use these graphs to identify the roots, or solutions, of the function. You will learn how to use different arrangements of the equation in order to locate specific, important points for the graph. You will also learn why the intercepts of the function translate to solutions of the equation.  StandardsCC.2.2.HS.C.5Construct and compare linear, quadratic, and exponential models to solve problems,

This task has students explore the relationship between the three parameters a, h, and k in the equation f(x)=a(x−h)2+k and the resulting graph. There are many possible approaches to solving each part of this problem, especially the first part. We outline some of them here (which overlap heavily in places), applied to the top left graph, and then only give the final answers in the solution provided.

This lesson focuses on students making decisions about what tools to apply to solve different problems related to quadratic expressions and equations. It is also intended to build awareness of the form an answer will take in order to help students make sense of the kind of problem they are solving. (9th/10th/11th Grade Math)
