Learning ObjectivesFlorida is situated in what is known as the "hurricane alley." This region starts from the west coast of Africa to Florida, and up the Carolinas. This region is prone to tropical storms and hurricanes due to the warm water temperatures. The objective of this lesson is to offer tips and strategies without causing fear to elementary-level students so that students they can be prepared for the event of a hurricane ahead of time.

Students will learn about respecting the gender identities, gender expressions, and sexual orientations of themselves and others through scenarios. Student groups will interpret and present the scenarios to the class.

In this series of lessons students explore the concepts of gender and gender expression through the use of mentor texts. Over the course of five sessions, you will read five texts and complete a process grid highlighting key components of each text. Students then create an illustration of how to demonstrate care for people across the gender spectrum.

This course focuses on the fundamentals of information security that are used in protecting both the information present in computer storage as well as information traveling over computer networks. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: explain the challenges and scope of information security; explain such basic security concepts as confidentiality, integrity, and availability, which are used frequently in the field of information security; explain the importance of cryptographic algorithms used in information security in the context of the overall information technology (IT) industry; identify and explain symmetric algorithms for encryption-based security of information; identify and explain public key-based asymmetric algorithms for encryption-based security of information; describe the access control mechanism used for user authentication and authorization; describe Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) as a common solution enabling security of many applications, including all Internet-based commerce; describe securing Internet Protocol (IP) communications by using Internet Protocol Security (IPSec); explain the importance of physical security and discuss ways to improve physical security of an enterprise; explain the use of such security tools as firewalls and intrusion prevention systems; explain malicious software issues, such as those brought forth by software-based viruses and worms; explain common software security issues, such as buffer overflow; describe the basic process of risk assessment in the context of overall IT security management. This session presents an overview of the association between water, sanitation, hygiene and human health. A particular focus upon transmission and treatment of diarrhea disease among small children. Other diseases given particular priority in the presentation include Hepatitis A and E viruses and bacteria that cause cholera or typhoid fever. Likewise, the importance of water-washed diseases, especially infectious skin and eye diseases, such as scabies and trachoma are presented. The preventive actions needed to reduce the burden of the various infectious diseases associated with water, sanitation and hygiene will be introduced.

This presentation provides an introduction to diarrheal diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites and other disease causing agents or pathogens. Furthermore, we’ll look at the range of syndromes associated with diarrhea and uncover two significant pathogens: rotavirus and vibrio cholera. Finally, we’ll delve into methods for managing diarrheal diseases and the significance of sanitation in preventing diarrheal diseases.

This lesson details the basics of healthy relationships: what they are and how to recognize them. It also covers consent, boundaries, power dynamics, red flags, and characteristics of different kinds of relationships. Students will engage in discussions and activities in which they will identify characteristics and assess the health of relationships in brief scenarios.

Students will be introduced to the reproductive system and the following body parts: penis, testicles, scrotum, ovary, uterus, vulva, clitoris, vagina, bladder, urethra, and anus. Students will get a basic understanding of anatomical orientation, basic function, and variation of these body parts. Students will discuss such topics as safe space, safe adults, and diverse bodies.

The lesson provides a refresher on basic anatomy, as well as the processes of ovulation, menstruation, and pregnancy. It goes through the stages of pregnancy, and the pregnancy options available to Oregon residents. The lesson ends with a Jeopardy-style lesson recap.

The lesson presents a definition of sex and asserts consent is a key aspect of healthy sexual experiences. Students will define the various parts of consent and review Oregon’s laws regarding consent, sex, and minors. They will investigate what influences their decisions about sex, and will then follow a fictional couple through various decision-making processes around deciding to or not to have sex, the use of birth control, pregnancy options, and decisions around parenting. Students will also research local reproductive and sexual health clinics.

This lesson explains and differentiates between sex assigned at birth, gender identity, and sexual orientation. There is also a discussion of why personal pronouns matter. It emphasizes the importance of respecting everyone regardless of their differences and walks students through ways to interrupt bullying.

This lesson provides a very basic overview of common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the best ways to prevent their spread. STIs are extremely common (1 in 2 people will be exposed to one by the time they’re 25), so this lesson reinforces the importance of prevention, testing, and treatment.

This is the second half of a basic introduction to sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This lesson focuses on prevention, the proper way to use condoms and other barrier methods, what to expect when getting tested for STIs, and how to talk to sexual partners about STI prevention.

This lesson introduces the topic of sexuality education, allows students to set ground rules for the upcoming lessons, gives them the opportunity to suggest topics they would like to learn about, introduces an anonymous question box, and explains why sex ed is important even if they aren’t sexually active.

In this presentation, we will discuss the Malaria Elimination Project, and why community engagement is so important for this project. Specifically, we will focus on the three major components of community acceptance, which is understanding the human behavior, the geography and the social structure of the people living in the given community.

This presentation provides an introduction to the eye disease, Trachoma. Trachoma is a serious health problem in low income countries, causing much suffering and blindness among the poorest populations in 52 countries worldwide. In continuation of this, we will talk about the epidemiology of Trachoma and provide a description of the disease, the risk factors, transmission modes, preventive strategies and interventions including mass drug administration.

This lesson intends to support learning about family makeup & how it impacts our lives. Relatedness or connection can take many forms when talking about family – it’s not one size fits or makes sense to all.In this lesson, participants will discuss their understanding of their family, identify/curate their family circles of connection, and how these circles impact their lives and decision-making. Understanding relationships, values, and what resonates as important is a part of practicing and engaging critical thinking skills.
