Students will examine artworks, research literature, and create study drawings and a 3-D model for a monument to a literary figure.

Students will use Van Gogh's "Portrait of Joseph Roulin" as inspiration for their own portraits of friends in the classroom.

Students explore 19th-century photographer Edward Curtis's documentation of a ritual performed by Native Americans. They then consider how ceremony and ritual practice are depicted and understood by those outside of a religious culture. Students use photography to document their own religious or spiritual rituals, and then examine one another's images and interpret their peers' spiritual beliefs based on the photographs.

Students will discuss the effects of war on families as depicted in a drawing and relief sculpture and re-create an artwork by forming a tableau and making a sculpture for a brave person.

Students are introduced to the mythological creatures featured in the myth of Hercules (Roman name for the Greek hero "Herakles"). They learn new vocabulary related to the creatures' body parts (e.g., talons, hooves, etc.), and plan and create a drawing of an original mythological creature. Students then name their creature and write a descriptive sentence about it.

Students will brainstorm a list of adjectives to describe two early photographs called "cyanotypes." Next they will create their own cyanotype photograph. Students will then write original poetry using the previous list of adjectives to describe their own nature-inspired cyanotype photograph.

Students will become familiar with the black-figure painting style of ancient Greece and its influence on Neoclassical artists during the 18th century, as seen in drawing, painting and silhouettes, or shadow portraits. They will create an original work of art using the silhouette technique.

Students explore a portrait of two historical princesses and consider the adornments the both wear. Each student compares these adornments to the decorative objects worn by a woman in their own lives and sketches a portrait of that woman, focusing on the objects of adornment she wears.

Students will examine the details and color in an 1821 painting by Jacques-Louis David depicting two sisters who are exiled princesses. Students will read a tale about the Brothers Grimm, who were writing fairy tales during the same time period that these sisters were exiled. Students will then write and illustrate a fairy tale inspired by the painting.

Students analyze one of Dorothea Lange's photographs and make connections to its historical context by creating a one-page written and visual response.

Students practice writing letters of the alphabet and explore how decorated letters can be used to convey stories or symbolic ideas. They create an "illuminated" alphabet in which each letter conveys concepts of home and family.

In this activity, learners explore the question "What is paper?" Learners discover the processes and materials required to make paper while experimenting with different recycled fibers and tools.

Students write descriptions and create portraits of characters from the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen using a variety of media.

Students consider the function of social-documentary photography. They research Dorothea Lange's documentary projects, and create their own photo essay about a subject of interest to them.

Students will examine architectural structures in paintings and how they are used, also considering the art elements, composition, emphasis, color, and light. They will also study the relationship between the built environment and nature in the paintings. Students then complete activities in which they select words and phrases to describe a painting's mood and write related poetry. Then they create drawings and write related poetry. As an optional activity, students may construct their own "camera obscura" and create a drawing.

Students create a postcard featuring a landscape that incorporates rubbings to create texture. Students write a letter on the back of the postcard describing the landscape.

This activity was designed for blind learners, but all types of learners can use it to understand how to create a print through letterpress printing.

Students will analyze art elements and symbolism on a 17th-century cabinet and create cardboard cabinets using symbols to convey a message.

Your students will have fun trying to solve a mystery in this lesson. Students are given a small detail of a painting, which they sketch and then give a title. Students shares their titles and try to determine the theme and subject of the full painting based on these clues. At the end of class the students put their details together like a puzzle to create a class reproduction of the painting.
