This multidisciplinary seminar addresses fundamental issues in global health faced by community-based healthcare programs in developing countries. Students will broadly explore topics with expert lecturers and guided readings. Topics will be further illuminated with case studies from healthcare programs in urban centers of Zambia. Multidisciplinary teams will be formed to develop feasible solutions to specific health challenges posed in the case studies and encouraged to pursue their ideas beyond the seminar. Possible global health topics include community-based AIDS/HIV management, maternity care, health diagnostics, and information technology in patient management and tracking. Students from Medicine, Public Health, Engineering, Management, and Social Sciences are encouraged to enroll. No specific background experience is expected, but students should have some relevant skills or experiences.

This video lesson shows students that math can play a role in understanding how an infectious disease spreads and how it can be controlled. During this lesson, students will see and use both deterministic and probabilistic models and will learn by doing through role-playing exercises. The primary exercises between video segments of this lesson are class-intensive simulation games in which members of the class 'infect' each other under alternative math modeling assumptions about disease progression. Also there is an occasional class discussion and local discussion with nearby classmates.

Lecture slides by Dr. Jennifer Infanti (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) and recommended related/supporting readings for an introductory course in global health. This is one of the first lectures in the course, covering some of the foundations of the field of research and practice we call global health. It briefly introduces the history and development of global health, key concepts and definitions of global health, and provides an overview of the breadth of theoretical models that can be applied to make sense of various global health challenges. By the end of the lecture, students should have: 1) Acquired a basic understanding of the defining features of global health. 2) Gained an awareness of the diversity of theoretical approaches that can be used to approach and understand global health problems

"Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are a threat to global health. One concern is that bacteria will pass antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) to each other through horizontal gene transfer. A new study identified a novel source of ARGs in the environment. Bacteriophages are viruses that replicate inside bacteria, where they can incorporate bacterial genome fragments into phage capsids, allowing them to transfer those fragments to future hosts. Using metagenomics, researchers screened viral genes from an urban river for ARGs. They discovered 25 ARGs originating from bacteriophage genomes. Four genes were predicted to encode novel, functionally active beta-lactamases, conferring resistance to a variety of antibiotics. The results demonstrate that although present at low abundance, bacteriophages actively contribute functional ARGs to the freshwater metagenome, suggesting that they should be considered as a potential ARG dissemination route and included in ARG monitoring systems..."

This course is targeted toward individuals interested in designing or implementing a health information and communication technology (ICT) solution in the developing world. Implementing a health information technology project requires multidisciplinary teams. Global Health Innovation: Delivering Targeted Advice to an Organization in the Field

In this three-day workshop, students will get a broad introduction to global health issues. We will look at one particular non-governmental organization in India that works to improve health across the lifespan by empowering existing community resources to provide appropriate physical, psychological and social therapies, focusing on child development, adolescent and youth health, mental health, and chronic disease. This workshop equips student to explore novel ideas and technologies with an inspiring and ground-breaking Indian NGO.
Fulfills the Sloan Innovation Period (SIP) elective requirement. SIP occurs at the midpoint of each semester providing students with an intensive week of experiential leadership learning, as well as exposure to groundbreaking faculty work. It allows students to engage in intellectual exploration outside the classroom. SIP degree requirements include core courses in ethics and leadership as well as electives.

This course pairs faculty-mentored student teams with enterprises on the front lines of health care delivery in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. To tackle specific barriers identified by each partnering organization, the course is built around custom-designed projects in strategy, business model innovation, operations, marketing, and technology. Class sessions include interactive cases, practical exercises, and lively conversations with experts, all designed to support project work before, during, and after the intensive two-week onsite collaboration with entrepreneurs, leaders, staff, and stakeholders in the setting. Course assignments include a portfolio of host deliverable, a foundational toolkit designed to support each project, and a distillation of learning from the field.

"Obesity is a global health problem with wide-reaching health effects and limited effective treatment options. One new treatment, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), has received attention for its ability to affect the gut microbiota and microbial metabolism. Although researchers have found that donor selection influences microbiota engraftment and therefore the efficacy of FMT, the degree, variation, and stability of strain engraftment have not yet been examined in the context of multiple donors. In a new double-blind randomized control trial of FMT, researchers examined 87 adolescents with obesity receiving either multi-donor FMT or placebo. They found that over time, multi-donor FMT sustainably altered the structure and function of the gut microbiome. Two donor microbiomes – one female, one male – dominated in strain engraftment. These “super-donors” were characterised by high microbial diversity and a high Prevotella-to-Bacteroides (P/B) ratio..."

"The spread of antibiotic resistance is one of the most pressing threats facing global health. Every year, approximately 700,000 deaths worldwide can be traced to antibiotic resistance. That makes it crucial to identify antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and their transmission between humans and the environment. Unfortunately, because they rely on curated databases and are not sensitive to certain mutations, many methods can overlook novel ARGs. Now, a new machine learning method called HMD-ARG could provide researchers with a more powerful alternative. Taking sequence encoding as input, it determines whether an input sequence is an ARG, what antibiotic family the ARG is resistant to, its mechanism of resistance, and whether it is intrinsic or acquired, and even the sub-class of antibiotic the ARG resists, if it happens to be a beta-lactamase, all without querying against existing sequence databases. The HMD-ARG database is the largest of its kind..."

Watch this talk from TEDxAarhus 2018 by medical doctor and professor in global health Christine Stabell Benn and learn how hundreds of thousands of lives could be saved every year just by using the existing vaccines smarter. Christine Stabell Benn is a medical doctor and professor in global health. By studying real-life effects of vaccines in Africa, she has found that vaccines do much more than protect against the target disease; they have so-called non-specific effects. In most cases, they come with an added bonus of increased resistance against other infections than the target disease. If we take that into account, we can save hundreds of thousands of lives every year just by using the existing vaccines smarter. Christine argues that we should not only study vaccines' effects on the target infection, but also ask the often ignored question: what is the impact of vaccines on overall health?
