The hind brain is also called the rhombencephalon and is the brain stem that provides the connection between the spinal cord and the rest of the brain. The hind brain contains many vital structures including the Medulla Oblongata, the Pons (the link between the cerebellum, forebrain and mid-brain) and the majority of the cranial nerves, III to XII. In general the brain stem governs essential functions that are carried out sub-consciously via reflexes.

The Classroom Writing Competency Assessment (CWCA) exam tests for writing skills and is offered for any language. The exam can be administered to students of all proficiency levels in 5-12th grade. The exam was designed to provide teachers with indicators of increases in student writing competency. Students produce a writing sample following a given prompt, which must be created based on the following format: context, text, function, and content.

In this lesson students get their first opportunity to write programs that use the Circuit Playground. After first inspecting the board visually and hypothesizing possibly functionalities, students move online where they will learn to write applications that control an LED. By combining App Lab screens with the Circuit Playgrounds, students can gradually start to integrate elements of the board as an ouput device while relying on App Lab for user input.

The integument, or skin is an organ system of the body made of tissues that work together as a single structure to perform unique and critical functions, such as protection from the external environment and body temperature regulation. The skin is composed of many layers of cells. It is made of two to three layers- the epidermis, and the dermis, which are made up of both epithelial tissue and different types of connective tissue. These layers are held to underlying structures by connective tissue

T cells are long lived and are involved in cell mediated immunity. Functionally they are divided by the expression of CD4+ or CD8+ markers. CD4+ T helper cells recognise antigens bound to MHC II complexes and are involved with the control of intracellular and extracellular pathogens; they can interact with CD8+, NK and dendritic cells or with B cells. Cytotoxic CD8+ T cells recognise the MHC I complex and destroy infected or neoplastic cells.

The lower urinary tract is the collection of organs which convey the formed urine from the kidneys to the exterior of the body. The urine is not altered in this part of the system in species other than the horse (where mucous is added) but instead its function is to collect and store the urine until enough of it is collected for release to become necessary. This gives the animal urinary continence. Three major structures make up this tract. The ureters, the bladder and the urethra.

The Role of the Volunteer in Hospice Care. The importance of volunteers to the program cannot be overstated.  Without volunteers, we could not provide the kinds nor the scope of services that are so urgently needed to enhance the quality of lives of our patients and their families.  In this service, volunteers will learn about the specific functions and responsibilities expected of the volunteer, including the importance of working as a member of the multidisciplinary team working with both the patient and the family.

In this lesson, students closely examine Dickinson's poem "There's a certain slant of light" in order to understand her craft. Students explore different components of Dickinson's poetry and then practice their own critical and poetry writing skills in an emulation exercise. Finally, in the spirit of Dickinson's correspondences, students will exchange their poems and offer informed critiques of each others' work.

In this unit, students will read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian while meeting the learning targets of theme, character development, conflict, and use of literary devices. They will apply their knowledge by creating several artifacts to represent their learning.

In this activity, students will record a list of things they already know about hummingbirds and a list of things they would like to learn about hummingbirds. Then they will conduct research to find answers to their questions. Using their new knowledge, each student will make a hummingbird out of art supplies. Finally, using their hummingbirds as props, the students will play charades to test each other in their knowledge of the ruby-throated hummingbirds. The purpose of this activity is to provide students with information on ruby-throated hummingbirds, provide students with the opportunity to conduct research on hummingbirds in topic areas that interest them, and to provide students with opportunities to share their knowledge with other students. By completing this activity, students will gain knowledge about ruby-throated hummingbirds. They will also gain experience researching a topic of their choosing related to hummingbirds and communicating those results in several different formats.

Students learn about nanocomposites, compression and strain as they design and program robots that compress materials. Student groups conduct experiments to determine how many LEGO MINDSTORMS(TM) NXT motor rotations it takes to compress soft nanocomposites, including mini marshmallows, Play-Doh®, bread and foam. They measure the length and width of their nanocomposite objects before and after compression to determine the change in length and width as a function of motor rotation.
