Paleoecological exercise: Testing competition among Paleozoic brachiopods

Students use the procedure outlined by Casey Hermoyian and colleagues (2002) to test whether competition played a role in structuring a strophomenid brachiopod community in the Middle Devonian Onondaga limestone of western New York. It is not necessary to use these particular brachiopods; brachs from other localities, ages, and species could work, too, if chosen well. Students sort through a collection of brachiopods, separating them into groups of species defined by mutual agreement. They then use measurements of the commissure length to test two predictions made by Robert MacArthur's (1972) theory of how Hutchinson's (1959) niche partitioning would be evidenced: nonoverlapping resource use among former competitors but with very little distance between them. Students graph results, calculate ratio sums of their measurements and z statistics to test whether their results are significant. Finally, students prepare a conference-type abstract based on their results. The activity gives students practice in observing differences among groups, measurement, graphing, statistical calculation, synthesizing results, and clear presentation of their synthesis. Students also practice group and individual work in this exercise.

In an active way, students discover a few critical facts about how we use energy and how much energy we use. Each student has a "clue," some of which are pertinent energy facts and others are silly statements that are clearly unrelated to the topic. Students mingle and ask each other for clues until they have collected all the facts they need. This provides a more interactive way to communicate energy statistics, compared to a lecture and introduction with board work. The goal is to introduce students to some key terms and issues associated with energy as a necessary prerequisite for the remainder of the unit.

U.S. Child Labor History: A Documentary Lecture on Child Workers During the Progressive Era

All of these children are part of U.S. child labor history, where many children were exploited by companies, working long 10-12, sometimes 16 hours shifts for as little as pennies a day. These kids were exploited until unions and federal and state labor laws protected kids. From 1870 – 1890, child labor increased three fold. 1870 was the 1st U.S. census that reported child labor statistics, and 750,000 children worked. Child labor peaked in 1900 when 18.2% of all U.S. kids under the age of 16 WORKED, often at very dangerous jobs.

Jeff Davis On The Right Platform, Or The Last "act of Secession"

A caricature of Jefferson Davis, probably issued not long after the bombardment of Fort Sumter, but certainly postdating his February 1861 election as president of the Confederacy. Davis is shown standing on a gallows, draped in the Confederate flag and wearing on his head a misshapen Phrygian cap. Under him is a "Secession Trap" door. He anticipates his drop saying, "O dear! O dear! I don't really want to secede this way--I want to be let alone.'" To the gallows crossbar is nailed a "Letter of Marque." (See "The Southern Confederacy a Fact!!!," no. 1861-22.) Below stand several observers, including many prominent secessionists who await their own execution with nooses around their necks. They are (left to right) Secretary of State Robert Toombs, Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard, Vice President Alexander Stephens, and South Carolina governor Francis W. Pickens. Each of them speaks. Toombs: "I begin to feel weak in the knees!" Beauregard: "Oh Jeff! Jeff! is that the elevated position that you promised me?" Stephens: "Alas! Alas! I prophesied in November that secession would be the death of us." Pickens is still defiant, saying: "Can it be possible that they will dare to hang a gĚ_Ąentleman from South Carolina?'" The cartoonist mocks the opportunism evident in Winfield Scott's endorsement of both the abolitionist cause and the Missouri Compromise. Scott, in military uniform, is seated at a table with a plate of soup before him. He lifts his spoon from the plate and finds in it a kneeling black man, with arms outstretched saying, "Dis poor nigger am like Jonah, when de men would'nt let him stay in de Ship; and de whale would'nt let him stay in de water." Scott observes, "Here's a predicament! first I shall have to swallow this nigger to please the north & then take a compromise emetic and deliver him up to please the south. Faugh! what a dose of Ginger, but I am anxious to serve the country at $25,000 pr Annum so down he goes." Appearing from out of the steam is a Southern planter who remarks, "I should think from the flavor of the Generals last plate of Soup that my darkey had tumbled into it. I've heard of 'Green Turtle' and 'Mock Turtle' but that would be a pretty Strong dish of 'Black Turtle." For the origin of the perennial joke about Scott's "hasty plate of soup," see "Distinguished Military Operations" (no. 1846-15). The style of "A Dish of Black Turtle" is similar to that of John L. The course covers the basic techniques for evaluating the maximum forces and loads over the life of a marine structure or vehicle, so as to be able to design its basic configuration. Loads and motions of small and large structures and their short-term and long-term statistics are studied in detail and many applications are presented in class and studied in homework and laboratory sessions. Issues related to seakeeping of ships are studied in detail. The basic equations and issues of maneuvering are introduced at the end of the course. Three laboratory sessions demonstrate the phenomena studied and provide experience with experimental methods and data processing.
This course was originally offered in Course 13 (Ocean Engineering) as 13.42.

This course presents a challenging multi-dimensional perspective on the causes of human disease and mortality. The course focuses on analyses of major causes of mortality in the US since 1900: cancer, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, diabetes, and infectious diseases. Students create analytical models to derive estimates for historically variant population risk factors and physiological rate parameters, and conduct analyses of familial data to separately estimate inherited and environmental risks. The course evaluates the basic population genetics of dominant, recessive and non-deleterious inherited risk factors.

"Best practice collection for gender balance and non-discrimination in career guidance" was developed in the frame of the Erasmus+ project „Online mentoring and Professional Peer Coaching Skills for Youth Training“. The project brings together the professionals from Romania, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Lithuania and Czech Republic with the aim to focus of the mentoring and career quidance in the field of nursing, teaching and social work of the young persons in search of a job and young professionals.
As their area of nursing, teaching and social work are based on the inter-relationship between the client and the professional, the stereotypes and biases plays crutial role on the both sides. And on the side of professional there exists one challenge on the top: their area of work is strongly connected with the vision of „care“, it´s stereotypes and consequences into the atribution of the female-male division of work. Feminisation of the sector of education and care is evident in every of the involved country – the statistics are used to show the cases in respective countries.
The main theoretical concepts are supported by the relevant statistics from respective partner countries. To underline their relevance to the specific sector of social care, nursing and teaching the specific section (section 4) focus on national statistics. The the question of gender balance has also implication to the labour market as well as for conception of the politics and societal approach to the topic of equality itself. Section 5 determine basic knowledge of the importance of gender balance and it´s benefits for the society and organizational lebel.
Finally section 6 brought the attention to the best practices themselves. They are classified according their topic and focus. Firstly there are listed practices of reaching gender balance in nursing/teaching/social work itself. As examples shows, there is not many attention paid to the topic of non-discriminatory career quidance in the monitored areas. In the second part there are listed practices more widelly toutching this phenomena: non-discriminatory
approach and gender balance on employment market and public sphere.
The collection therefore has the role to rise the awareness about this topic not only between the young professionals, but also between the service care providers as employers who plays a significant role on the employment market. While the demographic situation is strongly associated with ageing trends and it´s impacts to the employability, it is necessery to bear in the mind, that it affects in the different ways men and in different ways women.

Most students entering university have some experience with trees growing in a forest ecology. Most student perspectives are that of a northern hemisphere chauvinist. Several other forest structures now exist but although the "present is key to the past," deep-time fossil forests have not always been the same. The goals of the activity are (1) to introduce quantitative ecological measures to fossil benthic (autochthonous)assemblages, (2) Test assemblage relationships using diversity measures, correlation coefficients, and simple multivariate statistical analyses, and (3)Reconstruct an autochthonous fossil community in space, demonstrating that ancient community structure differs from the Recent.

This course is a continuation of MAT087, Basic Mathematics. Topics include signed numbers, decimal numbers, exponential notation, scientific notation, solving and graphing linear equations, an introduction to polynomials, and systems of linear equations and their graphs. Geometrical topics include lines and angles, closed curves and convex polygons, triangles and similarities, and symmetry and proportion in nature and art. Students may complete this course during the first three weeks of the semester by passing the MyMathLab modules. Students will then be eligible to take either MAT 099 Intermediate Algebra, MAT 114-Quantitative Reasoning or MAT 120-Intro to Statistics the following semester. This course does not satisfy degree requirements.

As if they are engineers, students are tasked to design solar-powered model vehicles that are speedy and compact in order to make recommendations to a local car sales company. Teams familiarize themselves with the materials by building solar-panel model car prototypes, following kit instructions, which they test for speed. After making design improvements, they test again. Then they take measurements and calculate the volume of each team’s vehicle. They rank all teams’ vehicles by speed and by size. After data analyses, reflection and team discussion, students write recommendations to the car company about the vehicle they think is best for consumers. Youngsters experience key portions of the engineering design process and learn the importance of testing and collaborating in order to make better products. Pre/post-quizzes and numerous worksheets and handouts are provided.

Open Code was developed to follow the first steps of Grounded Theory but it is now possible to use it for all qualitative methods and it is prepared for Grounded Theory and Qualitative Content analysis. It is useful for sorting and classifying any kind of qualitative information. The software is developed to run on Windows. To run it on a Mac, you have to run a virtual machine or other systems to run pc-software on a mac computer.

The focus of this curricular unit is twofold. The first is to consider the math classroom as a racialized space. In doing so, the unit will shed light on why math education is not race-neutral and will explain how color-blindness reinforces the oppression of students of color. The unit will examine how color-blindness within mathematics education ignores historical data and blames academic failure on students, their families, and their communities without recognizing the systemic biases that reproduce racial inequality through material stratification, deficiency framing, and reduced access to high quality instruction.

The second part of the unit will consider anti-racist teacher-centered instructional strategies that directly address inequality in math instruction. Among these strategies, the unit will consider teaching for understanding, group participation through complex instruction, culturally relevant pedagogy, and teaching mathematics for social justice. To achieve this, the unit will provide several examples of activities that approach mathematics instruction from a culturally relevant and critical lens. Then, the unit will examine a brief race-neutral Calculus lesson on integral approximation and will highlight components that reinforce systemic racism. Finally, the unit will then address what changes must be made within the sample lesson to better address issues pertaining to race in the math classroom.
