Millions of people are on-line today and the number is rapidly growing - yet this virtual crowd is often invisible. In this course we will examine ways of visualizing people, their activities and their interactions. Students will study the cognitive and cultural basis for social visualization through readings drawn from sociology, psychology and interface design and they will explore new ways of depicting virtual crowds and mapping electronic spaces through a series of design exercises.

A great and early civilization arose on the subcontinent of South Asia that in time spread northward to the Himalayan region and eastward to Southeast Asia, a vast area including Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Myanmar. This resource introduces works of art from this area selected from the superb South and Southeast Asian and Islamic collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Included are examples of Buddhist and Hindu temple art and the later court arts of South Asia; these range from miniature painting and luxurious textiles to elegant personal possessions. As well as descriptions of the visual qualities and symbolic meanings of the art, also provided are a summary of South and Southeast Asian history, a section about Buddhism and Hinduism, a timeline and map, classroom activities, lesson plans, a bibliography, and a glossary.

These activities can be enjoyed by all age groups. All that is required is a little imagination.

This course is an exploration of visual art forms and their cultural connections for the student with little experience in the visual arts. It includes a brief study of art history, and in-depth studies of the elements, media, and methods used in creative thought and processes. It is the only resource I have found that approximates techniques, media, and an overview of different processes that is usually the first half of a printed text on art appreciation or an introduction to art. This is geared toward an undergraduate, lower-level student population. The art history survey is inadequate, but combined with another source, like Boundless' art history, this can be a complete text for an Art 100 course.

Art Interaction Mapping (AIM) is a creative brainstorming tool for advanced visual art projects. This framework was designed to help artists creatively integrate digital technologies with traditional mediums. These visualization models can be used to organize and structure ideas, refine concepts, or assess project outcomes.

This resource is a complete course in art appreciation/art history for an art 100 or arthist 101 level. It is most complete in its art history sections including non-Western art. The introductory materials on techniques and media are not as comprehensive, but the art period overviews are very good. There is a complete list of sources, licenses, and attributions located at the end of every module. This resource lends itself to inclusion in a modular fashion and there is a fee-based LMS integration available if desired. Quiz files and lecture slides are also available, although that may also be on a fee-basis.

This class provides an introduction to modern art and theories of modernism and postmodernism. It focuses on the way artists use the tension between fine art and mass culture to mobilize a critique of both. We will examine objects of visual art, including painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, prints, performance and video. These objects will be viewed in their interaction with advertising, caricature, comics, graffiti, television, fashion, folk art, and "primitive" art.

A collection of eight art lessons (puppets, visual arts, music) that integrate social emotional learning for grades K-2. Written lessons provide step-by-step instructions to be done at home. Lessons were created by Arts Corps teaching artists. Lessons are available in English and in Spanish.

An online interactive resource for children to explore and learn from visual art through quizzes and games. You can test your memory with lace, create a colourful fruit poster, paint a Paul Henry skyline, or try your knowledge with a quiz.

This fun interactive encourages looking and responding to visual art and enables the child to look at and talk about works of visual art through strengthening their vocabulary.

The BSU Introduction to Art is intended for an undergraduate course in art and art history. It incorporates OER material primarily from Saylor Academy and Lumen/Boundless Art History along with original additions by this editor. Educators may use this adaptation as parts of modules or as the entire reading for a course.

Derrick Woods, the gallery teaching manager at Speed Art Museum in Louisville, shows how to play the game “How Art You Feeling?” The idea is to have students express what they’re feeling through art instead of words. Students are asked to do a “full systems check” to consider how they’re feeling beyond simple words like “fine” or “okay.” Students then create art to show these feelings and share their art with a partner, who describes what they see in the artwork.

The game encourages students be thoughtful about expressing their feelings. It also helps them learn to consider their partner’s feelings. In the video, the two young women who are game partners discuss the feelings they were trying to express and find common elements in their drawings. The activity helps students develop social awareness and relationship skills.

Chompers is a trio of abstract coyotes with levers to lift and lower their heads and open their mouths so that they can appear to be howling at the moon. They were built by the artists at Opera-Matic, a neighborhood art group from Chicago that specializes in community engagement. Opera-Matic was invited to bring Chompers to the BLINK festival in Cincinnati. The BLINK festival was a celebration of light and art with a focus on interactivity. The “coyotes” were a big hit with festival-goers, especially children. They are mounted on recycled ice cream bikes for easy mobility in parades.

Students will learn about an artist's sketchbook that includes drawings of ballet dancers. They will practice two ballet steps and discuss how an artist uses line to depict dancers in rehearsal. Students will make a sketchbook and produce a series of quick sketches of dancers.

This course is an introduction to principles and techniques of visual communication, and provides opportunities for science and engineering majors to acquire practical skills in the visual computer arts, in a studio environment. Students will learn how to create graphics for print and web, animations, and interactive media, and how to use these techniques to effectively communicate scientific and engineering concepts for learning and teaching. This class involves three hands-on creative projects, which will be presented in class.
