In programming, it is often necessary to have objects with which one can store data, retrieve data when needed, and remove data when no longer needed. Such objects are instances of what we call container classes. There are basically two schemes for organizing the objects for storage: a linear scheme and a non-linear scheme. This leads to the notion of container structures. The linear container structure is called a list. The non-linear structure can be sub-classified into many sub-types such as the various tree structures and hash tables, which we will study in subsequent modules.

Identifying patterns is an important skill in understanding math and science. Patterns can be seen all around us. They are sometimes seen as repeating visual images or may be found as special arrangements of numbers in a list.

Students apply several methods developed to identify and interpret patterns to the identification of fingerprints. They look at their classmates' fingerprints, snowflakes, and "spectral fingerprints" of elements. They learn to identify each image as unique, yet part of a group containing recognizable similarities.

In this lesson, students will discover the meaning of "rhythm," "patterns," "color," and "texture" through the performance and modeled analysis of a class "symphony." Students will also evaluate the impact of each element on the whole work and note personal reactions and connections to this art form. Students will then work in small groups to apply the same elements and personal evaluation and connections to a historical work of visual art. At the end of the lesson, students will reflect on ways these two experiences are similar.
