Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: distinguish advertising from other types of marketing communication; identify different forms of advertising messages that businesses use to reach their target markets; describe the pros and cons of a variety of data types for market researchers; identify the critical elements of a market analysis; discuss the process of using STP marketing to accurately and effectively focus a firmŐs advertising efforts; create an advertising strategy that employs an appropriate mix of message objectives and methods; construct a media plan; describe the elements of an advertising campaign proposal. Caroline Hunter comments on the struggle for African liberation. Guests Caroline Hunter, Dinizulu Ceitou (both of Boston's African Liberation Day Committee), and Christopher Nteta (of the Pan African Liberation Committee) discuss the liberation struggle in Mozambique with host Topper Carew. Topics include Frelimo (the African freedom fighters in Mozambique), the influence of African American support on the cause, the relationship between corporations and the seizure of African land, the need for violence to achieve liberation, the relationship between racism and colonization, and the need for African Americans to recognize that the African struggle is their own. With his famously laconic style, President Calvin Coolidge captured the spirit of the 1920s when he announced in a speech before the Society of American Newspaper Editors that "the chief business of the American people is business." Coolidge's aphorism revealed the centrality of commerce to the nation and its culture in the 1920s, even while it concealed some of the wrenching cultural changes that were required to accommodate a commercial civilization. Coolidge, as a son of rural Vermont and small-town Massachusetts, played a key role in reassuring people that the new business order was compatible with traditional American values. In this 1925 address to the New York State Chamber of Commerce, Coolidge mixed new prescriptions for a pro-business government with traditional homilies about the contributions of American business "to the spiritual restoration of the world." He insisted that "traditional" values could fit comfortably into a business civilization.

Known best by his knack for moneymaking, turn-of-the-century steel magnate Andrew Carnegie nonetheless found a moment to pen a one-sided poetic tribute to the "eighth wonder" of the world--steel manufacturing in his Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, plant. This brief poem reflected how he (and other contemporaries) viewed the monumental process of steelmaking. The poem was notable for its use of passive voice and the absence of workers--miners, railroad men, or blast furnace crews--from the process by which "one pound of solid steel" came to be.

David Boeri reports on the Bank of Boston's new mortgage program for lowand moderate-income city residents. Boeri's report includes footage of Ira Stepanian (President, Bank of Boston) and Robert Mahoney (Bank of Boston) announcing the new program to the media at a press conference at a Roxbury branch of the Bank of Boston. Boeri reviews the terms of the program. He notes that many houses in the area are not eligible for the program because their sale prices are too high. Boeri interviews Diana Strother (Roxbury resident), who says that many residents do not make enough money to take advantage of the program. Boeri interviews Leon Wilson (Bank of Boston) about the terms of mortgages under the program. Boeri notes that the units in the Fort Hill condominium complex are too expensive to qualify for the Bank of Boston program. Boeri interviews Alvin Wilkins (Boston resident) and Eve Moss (realtor) about housing prices in the area. Boeri also interviews Bruce Marks (Hotel and Restaurant Workers Union). Marks calls the Bank of Boston program a 'public relations scam' because it does not truly help low-income residents. Boeri's report includes shots of the Fort Hill condominium complex.

George notes that banking leaders met with community leaders today to announce an agreement that will provide better banking services to poor neighborhoods. George reviews the details of the agreement, which will provide bank branches, loans, and increased investment to poor neighborhoods. George's report includes footage of the meeting of banking and community leaders. Richard Pollard (Massachusetts Bankers Association) says that redlining did not take place in the 1980s. Charles Stith (Organization for a New Equality), Bruce Bolling (Boston City Council), Willie Jones (Community Investment Coalition), John Hamill (Shawmut Bank), and Ronald Homer (Boston Bank of Commerce) all speak out in favor of the proposal. Michael Dukakis (Governor of Massachusetts) is present at the meeting. George reports that the agreement forces banks to restructure their rules in order to serve poor people. "Becoming Digital" traces the change in practice, theory and possibility as mechanical and chemical media are augmented or supplanted by digital media. These changes will be grounded in a semester length study of "reports from the front." These reports, found and introduced by students throughout the semester, are the material produced by and about soldiers and civilians on the battlefield from the introduction of wet photography during the Crimean and Civil Wars to contemporary digital content posted daily to Web 2.0 sites from areas such as Iraq and Afghanistan and possibly even the games and simulations they've inspired. Students will work through the ethical, aesthetic, technical and cultural problems raised by the primary content and secondary readings in three papers, a group project written with Inform 7, a presentation, and frequent discussion.

Lydon notes that the Flynn administration would like the Boston work force to be 10% female, 25% minority and 50% Boston residents. Lydon's report includes footage from an interview with Flynn about employment in Boston. Lydon reports that Flynn's proposed ordinance would change the demographics of the work force in the public and private sectors. Lydon notes that unions are opposed to Flynn's proposal. Business Ethics is a derived copy from the Corporate Governance course. It takes an interdisciplinary approach to ethics in business and provides modules in Ethical Leadership, Ethical Decision-Making, Social Responsibility, and Corporate Governance to respond to AACSB accreditation requirements. Students will actively study ethical theory by carrying out exercises to help them build theory-based tools for encountering ethical problems in business practice. They will also work with cases in business ethics designed to give them practice in developing skills of ethical leadership, ethical decision-making, and carrying out socio-technical analyses to respond to issues of social responsibility. Business Ethics culminates in a peer reviewed Ethics Bowl competition in which students will practice ethics advocacy in a variety of moral ecologies in business. In Connexions, a course is both a course (what is offered in a school curriculum) and a collection of modules. This course as a collection of modules has been designed to pull together the modules published in Connexions by this author for the purpose of showing different aspects of the Ethics Bowl competition and how it can be used in a university course on practical and professional ethics. The Ethics Bowl concept comes from Robert Ladenson of the Illinois Institute of Technology. Through the Association of Practical and Professional Ethics, the Ethics Bowl competition has been carried out nationally for thirteen years now. (More on the history of this competition can be found in Ladenson's article which is referenced in this course's first module.) Thanks to Robert Ladenson and Michael Davis for suggesting using the ethics bowl in engineering ethics classes at UPRM during a visit by the author to IIT in 2001.
