This is a poetry unit containing several modules. The first module posits the work of African American poet Langston Hughes, and specifically the poem "Let America Be America Again," as poems that establish a legacy of oratorical poems that address the social issues faced not only by African Americans, but additionally, by any and all Americans and especially the historically disenfranchised. Further, the poems put forth a call and a hope for betterment of the social conditions of all Americans. The lessons explore works that are considered poems in Hughes' legacy, focusing especially on three poems by three African American poets who composed and performed works at United States presidential inaugurations. The three inaugural poets are Maya Angelou, Elizabeth Alexander, and Amanda Gorman.Included in Section One is an introductory lecture. Sections Two and Four are Discussion Board assignments in which students are asked to consider theme and elements of poetry. Additionally, they are asked to comment on the similar discussions of classmates. Section Three is a short writing assignment which asks students to consider their own heritage or identity aspect, research and select two poems that represent the same, and write comparatively about these works.

The Bedouins of ancient Arabia and Persia made poetry a conversational art form. Several poetic forms developed from the participatory nature of tribal poetry. Today in most Arabic cultures, you may still experience public storytelling and spontaneous poetry challenges in the streets. The art of turning a rhyme into sly verbal sparring is considered a mark of intelligence and a badge of honor. Students will learn about the origins and structure of Arabic Poetry.
