It covers the earliest stages of brainstorming and discussing, continues through researching and compiling sources; writing, documenting, revising, and polishing a paper; and finally presenting the research topic to a wider audience in a professional manner. The focus is on MLA format, though the course could be modified for other formats. The first unit is an introduction to the project. It asks students to draw on knowledge of issues affecting their own community and world to help generate discussion that could eventually lead to a research topic.

In this math lesson, learners learn how to construct stem and leaf plots. Learners first estimate the number of drops of water that will fit on the head of a penny. Learners write their guesses on Post-it notes and arrange the notes in a stem and leaf plot. Then, learners conduct the experiment and record the results on Post-its that are displayed on the same stem and leaf plot, thus creating a back-to-back stem and leaf plot. Learners work in groups to analyze the data, paying particular attention to the data range and the extent to which different variables may have contributed to any disparities.

In this lesson, students are introduced to rate in the context of music. They will explore beats per minute and compare rates using mathematical representations including graphs and double number lines.Key ConceptsBeats per minute is a rate. Musicians often count the number of beats per measure to determine the tempo of a song. A fast tempo produces music that seems to be racing, whereas a slow tempo results in music that is more relaxing.
