Throughout this unit you will cover topics of: to understand safety in a shop workspace & develop basic skills to operate woodworking machines to construct a project, a clear understanding of safety in the workplace, assess their knowledge over safety through a safety test, demonstration how to operate hand and power tools, decipher a blueprint to build a wooden candy dispenser and to construct their candy dispensers.

In this lesson, students will be introduced to the grading rubric that will be used for weekly shop or lab grades. In this lesson, students will look at the Nebraska Career Readiness standards, see how they have been modified to fit the shop/lab setting, then brainstorm indicators for each standard. Finally, a PowerPoint will guide students through the rubric will be used. The rubric will be used at the end of each work for students to self evaluate during shop/lab work.  

This lesson is designed to familiarize new students with a piece of equipment they will use weekly if not daily in the welding lab.  Students will learn the key parts and purpose of a chop saw and then demonstrate how to use it. 

The circular saw is an important tool/piece of equipment used in Building Construction. In this set of lessons, students will identify the parts of a circular saw, describe the safety hazards associated with the circular saw, and demonstrate the steps to operating the circular saw. This lesson will consist of a PowerPoint lecture, notes, video, teacher demonstration, student demonstration, safety quiz, and student performance assessment.

This is a project based course designed to help middle school students explore career options using the Nebraska Career Education Model and understand the Nebraska Career Readiness Standards. The course is organized by three themes – Making it My Choice, A World of Options and Charting a Direction – with culminating individual and group projects. Students will define career clusters and pathways, describe examples of career readiness, utilize self-assessments to better understand interests, establish a career portfolio and create a personal learning plan to provide direction to high school and post-high school activities. This lesson presents an overview of the various measuring devices used in the agricultural mechanics industry.  Students will practice using several measuring devices to take measurements in the agriculture mechanics laboratory.

The jig saw is an important tool/piece of equipment used in woodworking. In this set of lessons, students will identify the parts of a jig saw, describe the safety hazards associated with the jig saw, and demonstrate the steps to operating the jig saw. This lesson will consist of a PowerPoint lecture, notes, video, teacher demonstration, student demonstration, safety quiz, and student performance assessment.

This lesson is set up as project based learning on how to measure metal.  Students will get first hand experience discovering foundational knowledge about tools that measure metal length width and thickness.  Then they will get to practice measuring objects and metal.  

In this set of lessons, students will learn key terminology associated with rafters and roofing systems. A PowerPoint will guide students through key terminology. Following this, there are 2 videos that will display the step off system and the speed square method of rafter layout. Students will follow along with the videos to complete these tasks. Finally, there is a rafter activity that can be used at the end of this set of lessons.

In this lesson, students will learn about the safety hazards associated with the small engines shop. Students will learn how to avoid those safety hazards to operate the safest learning environment.

Overview: In this class challenge, students will be put into teams of two. Each team will be given two sheet of paper, 12” of tape, two rulers, and a two pairs of scissors to construct a creative stand/structure that can hold as many textbooks as possible at least 2” off of the ground.

In this set of lessons, students will be introduced to shop safety. The lessons focus on overall shop safety, how to prevent accidents and where important items in the shop are located. This lesson does not cover specific safety for material handling, equipment or tools as those will be covered later in the course.
