Case Seminar Global health: Conflicting interests
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC
Rating
0.0 stars

This case seminar text describes a situation with conflicting interests and can be used to discuss child protection. There are multiple conflicts in the situation at hand, between the welfare of children and the autonomy of the mother, between the community needs and the care for the children and the mother, and between upholding a reputation and intervening for the best sake of the vulnerable.

Students should be encouraged to scrutinize their standpoints, not just reacting with a gut feeling. This will thus also be an exercise in a professional attitude.

Brain development can be damaged by environmental chemicals.
Philippe Grandjean, University of Southern Denmark and Harvard School of Public Health, explains the erroneous assumptions made over time about this. Studies from Faroe Islands, where people have been exposed to toxic agents, shows how this affects brains of children and their IQ levels.

How vaccines train the immune system in ways no one expected | Christine Stabell Benn | TEDxAarhus

Vaccines do much more than protect against the disease they are designed for. Watch this talk from TEDxAarhus 2018 by medical doctor and professor in global health Christine Stabell Benn and learn how hundreds of thousands of lives could be saved every year just by using the existing vaccines smarter. Christine Stabell Benn is a medical doctor and professor in global health. By studying real-life effects of vaccines in Africa, she has found that vaccines do much more than protect against the target disease; they have so-called non-specific effects. In most cases, they come with an added bonus of increased resistance against other infections than the target disease. If we take that into account, we can save hundreds of thousands of lives every year just by using the existing vaccines smarter. Christine argues that we should not only study vaccines' effects on the target infection, but also ask the often ignored question: what is the impact of vaccines on overall health?

What is maternal mortality? Maternal mortality is the risk of a mother to die when she is pregnant. It's the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. This number has decreased enormously in the past century or decades, but the differences between countries are huge. Why do some expecting mothers end up on the road to death, and some on the road to survival? What is needed to read the SDG 3.1, to lower maternal mortality ratio to 70 in the world? For an introduction to why mothers die, and what can be done to prevent these deaths, take a look at this video.

The newborn or neonatal period relates to children during the first 28 days of life. This session will explore how really simple and low cost interventions at high coverage could save the life of a large proportion of newborn children. During the past two decades, we have seen a dramatic improvement in child survival. In 1990, almost 13 million children died every year. Today, this number has reduced by more than half
to below six million. This is the result of an increasing number of people gaining access to clean water,
vaccination, education, nutrition, and health care. Learn more by watching this video.

This presentation provides an introduction to the innovative use of technology to improve maternal and child health in low and middle income countries. Two of the major challenges in relation to reproductive and child health is access to health services and the quality of services provided in the health system. In continuation of this we’ll look into how mobile phone interventions can strengthen access to and quality of life saving interventions particularly in the time surrounding the delivery when the woman and the newborns are most vulnerable.
