The following module consists of a PowerPoint presentation, two lab sheets, and a syllabus for modifying automotive engine courses to include HEV technologies and was developed through a seed grant from the CAAT. The PowerPoint discusses the application of variable valve timing (VVT) and Atkinson cycle principals to HEVs, and the extra hydrocarbon capturing devices added to HEVs due to the use VVT and Atkinson principles. The lab "Compression Testing VVT systems" reinforces the ideas of the presentation illustrating engine malfunctions caused by a faulty VVT system. For additional insight on HEV engine service procedures, an oil change lab sheet for HEVs is included. For educators looking to modify current courses, the syllabus has highlighted fields where HEV technologies were incorporated to an engines course at Lewis and Clark Community College.
This resource was developed through a seed grant from the CAAT and discusses the advanced air conditioning systems placed in HEVs and safety precautions to follow when servicing them. These systems are high voltage A/C compressors and the components controlling them (A/C ECU, HV ECU, and Converter Control Circuit). Safety precautions discussed include Class 0 insulated gloves, insulated tools, color coding of wire looms to indicate voltage, CAT III and IV multimeter use, and properly disabling high voltage circuits. For educators looking to modify current courses, a syllabus is included with highlighted fields where HEV systems and safety were incorporated into an existing automotive heating and cooling course at Lewis and Clark Community College.
The goal of the course is to introduce students to the various technologies and systems used to implement Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
These systems have the overall impact of automating various driving functions and create a safer driving experience for the passengers.
The basics of automotive electronics, fundamentals of electronic control systems, and the evolution of these systems will be introduced. The necessary components needed to implement ADAS include advanced location and vehicle surroundings sensors, wireless technology, and the networking and processing of data are presented.
The details of various ADAS are covered including the most recent innovations: lane keeping, collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, and autonomous vehicles. Other course topics include: sensor data fusion, advanced display and driver warning technology, impaired/medical emergency driver sensor technology, vehicle prognostics, and system troubleshooting.
The course lectures, handouts, homework assignments, lab exercises and projects, and exams are designed to train community college students that are in automotive advanced certificate and/or associate degree programs. The materials may also be adapted for use in the training of incumbent workers.
The basics of cybersecurity threat models, high risk attack areas of vehicles, classes of attacks, and protecting vehicles from attacks are introduced. Standards and protocols related to automotive cybersecurity will be covered. Cybersecurity methods and penetration testing for vehicles will also be presented. Attacking connected vehicles will be discussed by reviewing vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications and wireless access protocols, such as IEEE 1609. Potential attacks on automated vehicles will be described.
In this lesson students examine workplace tasks and concepts in agriculture and expand their understanding of agriculture.

Developed by Kettering University through CAAT seed funding, Design with Aluminum is an introductory course focusing on students' learning of basics of engineering design, properties, manufacturing processes, design aspects and design guidelines along with several real life examples and applications of aluminum alloy materials commonly used in automotive and other applications. The topics will be covered using 'Blended learning' and 'Flipped classroom' approaches. Being an introductory course, only basics of engineering design, mechanical and physical properties, mechanics (stress-strain relationships), and manufacturing processes as applied to body design are introduced. Where applicable, a comparison between steel and aluminum is presented and discussed. The lecture handouts, together with homework assignments, course projects, and exams are designed to train the targeted students in community colleges with basic math, CAD and mechanics experience, for associate degrees and/or certificate programs. Design with Composite Materials is an introductory course focusing on students learning properties, manufacturing processes, and design guidelines of fiber-reinforced composite materials. The basics of composite properties, mechanics, and manufacturing processes are introduced. Design guidelines and drafting notations will be emphasized for composite components with various fiber-reinforcements such as unidirectional fibers, random short fibers, and laminate stacking sequences. A module derived from the course “Intro to Mechatronics” at Lawrence Technological University discussing vehicle dynamics and controls. Included materials are a Power Point presentation and LabVIEW simulation file. This resource was developed through seed funding from the CAAT.
The goal of this course is to provide analytical and hands-on skills on defining and testing power losses in powertrain systems of electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid-electric vehicles (HEV).
The course contains introductory lectures to present power losses and energy efficiency in EV and HEV. Laboratory experiments and computer workshops, the main portion of the course, follow the lectures. The laboratory test modules are built with the use of hardware and tests including ordinary and planetary gear sets, gear power loss test rig, electric motors, two unmanned ground vehicles with individual wheel drives (3-wheeler and 4-wheeler), etc. National Instruments LabVIEW and myRIO are in use for practical laboratory work. Computer workshops facilitate the understanding of HE concepts and operational modes and develop skills in simulating vehicle characteristics.
Students will do practical laboratory-based studies on various sensors and data acquisition systems (DAQ), setting up test procedures, wiring up sensors for measurements, conducting experiments, recording experimental data, and analyzing test results. Gaining experience on estimating experimental vehicle characteristics and writing a test report is an important part of the course.

This free, downloadable curriculum provides high school students with a deep understanding of critical food system issues, empowers them to make healthy and responsible food choices, and encourages them to become advocates for food system change.
The food system spans the activities, people, and resources involved in getting food from field to plate. Along the way, it intersects with aspects of public health, equity and the environment.
This lesson plan was created by Jennifer Pritchett as part of the 2020 Nebraska CTE-Beginning Teachers Institute. The attached lesson plan is designed for students in grades 7-12 as a introduction to a service learning project. This lesson plan can also be used in classes such as Sociology, Introduction to Education, Ethics, Leadership, etc. Students will learn the meanings of values and rank their top 5 values in a hands on or virtual format. The culminating project is collaboration on a Google Slides presentation with the rest of the class.
