Bracing for Heat

Building on lessons learned over several summers, Kristin Raab—Health Impact Assessment and Climate Change Program Director in the Environmental Health Division of Minnesota’s Department of Health—packaged information from diverse communities into a cohesive toolkit that communities of all sizes can use to prepare for heat waves. The Minnesota Extreme Heat Toolkit describes changing weather conditions in Minnesota, the magnitude of potential health consequences from extreme heat, and key steps communities can take to prevent heat-related illnesses and deaths. The toolkit acknowledges that extreme heat response plans will vary with the size of the community and the habits of its residents: examples from the mostly rural Olmsted County and the urban centers of Saint Paul and Minneapolis illustrate a range of community plans that could be useful in Minnesota and beyond.

Concord Consortium: Excited States and Photons
Read the Fine Print

This concept-building activity contains a set of sequenced simulations for investigating how atoms can be excited to give off radiation (photons). Students explore 3-dimensional models to learn about the nature of photons as "wave packets" of light, how photons are emitted, and the connection between an atom's electron configuration and how it absorbs light. Registered users are able to use free data capture tools to take snapshots, drag thumbnails, and submit responses. This item is part of the Concord Consortium, a nonprofit research and development organization dedicated to transforming education through technology.

Learn about Coulomb's law and the concept that both the distance between the charges and the difference in the charges affect the strength of the force. Explore polarization at an atomic level, and learn how a material that does not hold any net charge can be attracted to a charged object. Students will be able to:

It is essential to lay a solid foundation in mathematics if a student is to be competitive in today's global market. The importance of algebra, in particular, cannot be overstated, as it is the basis of all mathematical modeling used in applications found in all disciplines. Traditionally, the study of algebra is separated into a two parts, elementary algebra and intermediate algebra. This textbook, Elementary Algebra, is the first part, written in a clear and concise manner, making no assumption of prior algebra experience. It carefully guides students from the basics to the more advanced techniques required to be successful in the next course.

Accounting is the process of identifying, measuring, recording, and communicating an organization’s economic activities to users. Users need information for decision making. With an emphasis on the corporate form of business organization, this lesson will examine how financial transactions are analyzed and then reported using four financial statements: the income statement, statement of changes in equity, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows. This lesson introduces each statement using an example based on a fictitious corporate organization called Big Dog Carworks Corp.

OER Curriculum guide: Adult Secondary level: Algebra and functions
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating
3.0 stars

Based on the College and Career Readiness Standards in Action- 25% of higher level math instruction should be spent on Algebra and Functions. This includes Interpreting quadratic equations, using their structure to rewrite them in equivalent forms which serve a purpose. Also creating and solving quadratic equations to solve problems, both algebraically and graphically. They are to be able to re-arrange formulas involving quadratics and highligh specific quantities. (Guide to Effectively Managing Higher-Level Content Standards in Mathematics.)The amount of OER material available to assist instruction in higher level EFL math for adults is numerous, but searching for it often gets one tangled in the pedigogical instruction, with simplistic "real-life" examples, whereas adults with REAL "real-life" experience can appreciate the topics applied to broader world examples. This curriculum guide will give suggestions  for pre-lesson activities to stimulate prior knowledge, walk you through a lesson example, and hopefully whet your appetite for using OER's in your regular instruction.

Push and Support Cards: A Bridge to Advanced Mathematics for the Multi-Level Adult Education Classroom Curriculum Guide
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
5.0 stars

Adult education classrooms are commonly comprised of learners who have widely disparate levels of mathematical problem-solving skills. This is true regardless of what level a student may be assessed at when entering an adult education program or what level class they are placed in. Providing students with differentiated instruction in the form of Push and Support cards is one way to level this imbalance, keeping all students engaged in one high-cognitive task that supports and encourages learners who are stuck, while at the same time, providing extensions for students who move through the initial phase of the task quickly. Thus, all
students are continually moving forward during the activity, and when the task ends, all students have made progress in their journey towards developing conceptual understanding of mathematical ideas along with a productive disposition, belief in one’s own ability to successfully engage with mathematics.

Teaching Pragmatics explores the teaching of pragmatics through lessons and activities created by teachers of English as a second and foreign language. This book is written for teachers by teachers. Our teacher-contributors teach in seven different countries and are both native-speakers and nonnative speakers of English. Activities reflect ESL and EFL classroom settings. The chapters included here allow teachers to see how other teachers approach the teaching of pragmatics and to appreciate the diversity and creativity of their endeavors.
