    Course Information

    Course Description: ENG 220. Introduction to Language and Culture (3).  Introduction to the study of language with a particular focus on American Englishes, including the history of American English. Focus is on cultural influence on language across the US and how the use of language is associated with power. Study of the basic building blocks of language. Study of variations of language across cultures and contexts, including contemporary and historical spoken, written, and digital registers and genres of American English. Examination of the effects of technology, culture, and context on language.

    Course Requirements

    Prerequisites & Technology Requirements

    A grade of "C" or better in ENG 101/103/101A, which means that students should be proficient with writing academic essays in MLA format, have a basic understanding of source documentation/citation, and be proficient with proper use of grammar.

    In addition, students taking an online course should have a basic knowledge of computer and internet skills, including the ability to use Canvas, check YC e-mail, and use Microsoft Word. Please review the minimum technical skills strongly suggested for all online learners.

    Microsoft Word is REQUIRED for assignment submission for this course, so you must be able to use Word for document creation. You can use any version of Microsoft Word, including the FREE version for YC students offered through Office 365.

    Course Content & Learning Outcomes

    Course Content:

    1. History of the English language in the US
    2. Introduction to field of linguistics
    3. Phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics
    4. Dialects & register
    5. Approaches to grammar and language
    6. Effects of context, culture, and technology on language


    Required Assessment: 2500 words of monitored writing. A minimum of 1500 of these words must be in the form of a scholarly essay. 

    LEARNING OUTCOMES:

    (In ENG 220, the learning outcomes are met throughout the course. This means that you will work toward achieving the course learning outcomes throughout the course.)

    1. Discuss the history of the English language in the United States. (1)
    2. Describe the way language works and develops across cultures and contexts, including how the use of language is associated with power. (1)
    3. Identify key concepts and terminology needed to describe and analyze language. (2-4)
    4. Analyze language by connecting technical linguistic information to daily experiences with language across cultures and contexts, including contemporary and historical spoken, written, and digital registers and genres. (3, 4)
    5. Explain the difference between prescriptive and descriptive approaches to grammar and language. (5)
    6. Analyze the effects of context, culture, and technology on language in the US. (6)

    REQUIRED ASSESSMENT:
    1. Demonstrate thoughtful and precise writing skills by completing at least 2500 words of monitored writing. This requirement will be met via a final paper of 1500-2000 words and 250-500 word short papers.

    In this course, we will progressively build toward mastery of each of these learning outcomes as we move through the course.
