    Circle Mania

    Circle Mania

    Overview

This resource was created by Heidi Meyers, in collaboration with Dawn DeTurk, Hannah Blomstedt, and Julie Albrecht, as part of ESU2's Integrating the Arts project. This project is a four year initiative focused on integrating arts into the core curriculum through teacher education, practice, and coaching.

    Lesson Title:  Circle Mania

    Content Area:  Math

    Fine Arts Area:  Visual Arts

    Grade Level:  7th

Teacher:  Heidi Meyers & Dawn DeTurk

    Standards and Alignment

    Content Area Standard:

MA 7.3.3.c Determine the area and circumference of circles.

    Fine Arts Standard:

FA 8.2.1.d Investigate and apply relationships between elements of art and principles of design to brainstorm visual possibilities

    Key Vocabulary:

    Area

    Circumference

    Elements of art

    Principles of design

    Materials List:

    Markers

    Construction paper

    Compass

    Ruler

    Instructional Delivery

Day 1 Teach the students how to calculate the area and circumference of circles. How to use a compass to make circles.

The students will apply relationships between elements of art and principles of design when they brainstorm ideas for their project.  They will then create a design that includes at least two circles of which they will calculate the area and circumference.

    Assessment and Reflection

    Content Assessment:

The students seemed to have a good grasp of how to draw circles using a compass. We will continue learning about how to find circumference.

    Arts Assessment:

We saw creativity in the students’ art work and they utilized principles of design like patterns, repetition, and unity.

    Student Reflection:

    Teacher Reflection:

I think the students enjoyed working on the art project. The only thing I would change is that I wanted to have the circumference and area lessons done before the art. However, I also don’t feel there was any loss or mistake in having the schedule of lessons adjusted.
