Sensory Overload

ACTIVITY OBJECTIVE: To reinforce the concept of tending to the child’s own emotions. Break cards are made to help the child address their emotions and choose the kind of break based on their emotion.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: Remind the child of the break cards before any activity. Three color-coded cards, each with a different purpose. The first one is for when he’s feeling bored or uniterested in the task, the break is for 2 minutes, and he gets to stay in the classroom. The second one is for when he’s feeling anxious/stressed, it’s for 5 minutes, in the hallway. The third one is for when he feels overwhelmed by the noise in class, it’s for 10 minutes, in the playground.

FOR PRINTABLES

I printed a photo with an hourglass on it, in 3 different colors, and added the information on them manually.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR PRACTITIONER

The child may not be using the cards at first, or may resist them. It’s important to keep reminding the child that they’re available to be used at any time.
