    Overview

    Students will discuss the differences between German and US cities, foods, fashion and more. They will also discuss differences in cultural etiquette and customs.

    German Cities and Food / Deutsche Städte und Essen

    Description  

    Students will discuss the differences between German and US cities, foods, fashion and more. They will also discuss differences in cultural etiquette and customs.

    German living in specific cities.  German culinary experience.  Deutsche leben in bestimmten Städten. Deutsches kulinarisches Erlebnis.

    Perspectives 

    Value of the difference between cities in the United States and cities in German speaking countries.  Value of the difference in culinary experiences in German speaking lands. Wert der Differenz zwischen Städten in den USA und Städten im deutschsprachigen Raum. Wert des Unterschieds in kulinarischen Erlebnissen im deutschsprachigen Raum.

    NCSSFL-ACTFL World-Readiness Standards

    • Standard 1.1 Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
    • Standard 1.2 Students understand and interpret spoken and written language on a variety of topics.
    • Standard 3.2 Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through German and the German-speaking world.
    • Standard 4.2 Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons between the cultures in German-speaking countries and their own.

    • Objective: COMM 1.1 – Interact and negotiate meaning (spoken, signed, written conversation) to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions.
    • Objective: CLTR 1.1 – Analyze the cultural practices/patterns of behavior accepted as the societal norm in the target culture.
    • Objective: CTLR 2.2 – Describe the connections of products from the target culture with the practices and perspectives of the culture.

    • I can compare and contrast, in my own and German speaking culture differences between: Cities, Fashion, Eating Customs.
    • In my own and other cultures I can make comparisons between products and practices to help me understand perspectives.

    Materials Needed

    Warm-Up

    Begin the activity with some discussion questions:

    • Wie unterscheiden sich die Skylines von Frankfurt und Seattle? (How are the skylines different?)
    • Bevorzugt ihr ältere oder neue Gebäude? (Do you prefer old or new buildings?)
    • Was sind die Unterschiede zwischen deutschen und US-amerikanischen Städten? (What are the differences between German cities and cities in the U.S.?)

    Main Activity

    1. Students will identify the differences between German and US cities.
    Identifiziere die Unterschiede zwischen deutschen und US-amerikanischen Städten.

    Discussion Questions:

    • Welche Läden findet man in Deutschland nicht? (What stores would you see in the US that aren’t in Germany?)
    • Wo findet man diese Läden? (an der Straße oder Einkaufszentrum?) (Where are stores located? ( on the street vs. mall))
    • Wie kleiden die Leute in Deutschland anders als in USA? (How do people in Germany dress differently than in the US? (Adidas))
    • Was sind us Essengewohnheiten? (What are US eating habits?)
    • Was sind deutsche Essengewohnheiten? (What are German eating habits?)

    Wrap-Up

    Ask students the following question(s) to finish the activity:

    • Was ist Kaffee und Kuchen? (What is 'Coffee and Cake'?)
    • Wann nimmt man Kaffee und Kuchen zu sich? (When do you have / eat 'Coffee and Cake'?)

    End of Activity

    • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
      their confidence.
      (Use thumbs up/thumbs down or download our student cards.)
    • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
    • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
