    Overview

    Students will discuss the genre of crime in movies and books and create their own crime stories.

    Reading and watching crime stories is popular in the United States and in German speaking countries.  Das Lesen und Anschauen von Krimis ist in den USA und im deutschsprachigen Raum beliebt.

    Perspectives 

    People in German speaking countries enjoy some of the same reading material and shows that people in the United States enjoy.  Menschen in deutschsprachigen Ländern genießen einige der gleichen Lesematerialien und Shows, die Menschen in den Vereinigten Staaten genießen.

    Materials Needed

    Warm-Up

    1. Discuss Can-Do Statements with the Students

    2. Discussion Statements:

    • Say 4 cities that start with the letter A.
      Sag 4 Städte die mit A anfangen.
    • Say 5 countries that start with the letter S.
      Sag 5 Länder die mit S anfangen.
    • Say 5 Verbs that start with the letter V.
      Sag 5 Verben die mit V anfangen.

    3. Discussion Questions:

    • Was assoziiert ihr mit dem Begriff "Krimi"? (What do you associate with Crime movies?)
    • Schaut ihr gerne Krimis? Welche? Warum oder warum nicht? (Do you like watching crime movies? Which ones? Why or why not?)
    • Was gefällt euch an Krimis? (What do you like about crime movies?)
    • Findet ihr "wahre" Krimis oder "fiktive" Krimis interessanter? (Do you think true crime movies or fiction crime movies are more interesting?)

     

    Main Activity

    1. Look at the pictures, think about what the story could be, and come up with your own crime story!
    Schaut die Bilder an. Was könnte die Geschichte sein? Denkt euch zusammen oder selbst einen Krimi aus.

    2. Have the students share an overview of their crime stories.

    Wrap-Up

    1. Ask students the following question(s) to finish the activity:

    • Welche Krimis (Romane) kennt ihr? (Which crime novels do you know?)
    • Hat ein Roman dieselbe Wirkung (effect) wie ein Film oder eine Sendung (broadcasting)? (Does a novel have the same effect as a film or a broadcasting?)

    2. Watch the trailer for Tatort and then discuss.

    • What do you notice? Is “Tatort” different from crime movies from the US?
      • Was fällt euch auf? Ist Tatort anders als amerikanische Krimis?

    3. Share emergency numbers with students:
    110 Polizei, 112 Rettungsdienst.

    End of Activity

    • Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate
      their confidence.
      (Use thumbs up/thumbs down or download our student cards.)
    • Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
    • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future activities!
