Working with Cloud-based Collaboration tools like Google Docs

    Overview

Through hands-on tasks using Google Apps for Education as the sample tool, students will learn what are cloud-based collaborative tools like Google Apps for Education, how they are used in the classroom and what they have to offer teachers and students. For performance tasks, a Google or Gmail account is suggested.

    Preparation

An instructor for this module should have a solid understanding in working with cloud-based collaborative technologies such as Google Apps for Education. They should have researched case studies of effective uses of collaborative cloud-based tools in the learning setting and be able to demonstrate effective examples of these tools such as Google Apps in practice.

    Explaining and Defining the Tools

Use concrete examples of classroom situations in explaining these tools such as being able to work on lessons and access them from any computer unlike saving to a flash drive that is often misplaced or forgotten. Have students read 3 articles related to cloud-collaboration and Google Apps for education and answer questions on what makes them fit this definition and what features would support student learning.

    Opening

Read the following articles on cloud collaboration and Google Apps for Education and then answer these questions:

    1. How would you best explain what a cloud-based collaborative tool is by definition and in an explanation students would understand?
    2. How do Google Apps for Education fit with this definition as an example of cloud-based collaborative tools?
    3. What other commonly known tools may fit this description to relate to?
    4. List 3-5 features in these tools that could support learning and how.

Creating an Integrated Lesson Using Collaborative Cloud-based Tools

Students will look at the sample lessons given that integrate collaborative cloud-based tools into a content area and create their own lesson using collaborative tools to support learning of content area material.

    Performance Task

Using the example lessons provided, create a lesson plan in the approved lesson plan format that integrates the use of collaborative tools in Google apps to support and teach a lesson in a content area. The content area can be any subject such as science, math, foreign language, etc.

Submit the lesson in a shared Google Drive or Google Doc to the instructor Google Apps integrated lessons to use as examples:

Using Digital Rubric Tools for Formative Assessment

Students will create learn about different online rubric tools and Google apps rubric add-ons to use as formative assessments. They will create rubrics to assess both student work from their lesson plans and their own lesson itself.

    Formative Assessment

In this task, each student will use a digital tool to create rubrics to use as a formative assessment tool. One rubric will be created as an assessment of student work to be generated from the lesson plan posted to the Performance Task and the second rubric will be a self-assessment of that lesson plan.

In the Google Document used to create the lesson plan for the Performance Task, go to Add-on's and choose Orange Slice; Teacher Rubric. Open the add-on from Add-ons > OrangeSlice: Teacher Rubric > Score Rubric. First, you'll create a rubric. Next, you'll enter the assignment's point value. Then you'll grade the assignment; and lastly, conclude by processing the rubric into a final grade

Next, search for the Chrome Store in the Chrome Browser and add on the Gradelicious extension: Check out "Gradelicious": https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gradelicious/gmncfbkfngfechceeipjefcffmoimljb?utm_source=gmail
