    File Map Completion

    File Map Completion

    Overview

In this lesson, students will wrap up all the chapters of their self-portrait. They’ll complete a File Map to record the name and location of each of their files so that the files are all accessible when they’re ready to upload them.

    Preparation

    • Read the lesson and student content.
    • Anticipate student difficulties and identify the differentiation options you will choose for working with your students.
    • Make copies of the File Map handout for your students.

    Project Work Goals

    • By the end of class, students should have all their files finished and accessible.

SWD: Assist students if they are struggling to identify good goals. Consider grouping those who need extra help and working with them as a way of providing support.

    Opening

What do you have left to accomplish before all your files are ready to go? Review your planning documents and the Work Time options.

    • Option 1: Writing. Do you still need to work on your written chapter? Do you have an additional written chapter you would like to include (this could be prose, poetry, song lyrics, and so on)? Do you need to add additional artifacts to your work? You may spend this time working on your writing.
    • Option 2: Editing. Do you want to refine work you have already written? You may spend this time editing and revising your work.
    • Option 3: Multimedia Editing. Do you have photographs, slideshows, video, or audio that you need to edit for inclusion in your self-portrait? You may spend this time editing these files.
    • Option 4: Research and Gathering. Do you have to do any research or find resources for your self-portrait? Think about artifacts you may wish to include: videos, links to news articles, locations for maps, and so on. You may spend this time finding and documenting these resources.
    • Option 5: Other? What other tasks do you have to accomplish? Do you have to draw or otherwise create images for your self-portrait? Do you have to transcribe any interviews you conducted? Do you have to record an audio version of a written chapter?
    • Decide what you will be doing, set your goals for the Work Time, and share your plan with your teacher.

    Open Notebook

    File Map

    • Distribute the File Map handout and go over it with your class.
    • Make sure students understand that before they begin uploading their work, their files should be completely edited and ready.

    Work Time

How will you keep track of where all your files are located?

    • Review the File Map with your teacher.

You will need to complete the File Map by the end of this lesson to help you make sure your files are organized and accessible before the next lesson.

    Project Work

    • Take this time to hold conferences with students who you find need the support. ELL: It will be important to spend extra time with ELLs in conferences, as needed. Determine whether they need extra time alone or with other students (or something else). Be sure to observe and ask questions to have a good understanding of your students’ needs.
    • You may want to allow students to confer with partners as they work, supporting each other even as each moves forward with his or her individual project.
    • Make sure students are completing their maps and are able to easily access their files.

    Work Time

    • Continue creating, editing, and organizing your chapters and your artifacts. For example, you may work on writing, editing your prose, editing videos or slideshows, transcribing interviews, finding links, or obtaining maps.

Also remember that before the end of this lesson, you must complete the File Map. You’ll need the map for the next lesson.

    • Option 1: Writing. You may spend this time writing or adding artifacts to any written chapters you have included.
    • Option 2: Editing. You may spend this time editing and revising your work.
    • Option 3: Multimedia Editing. You may spend this time editing any multimedia files you have included.
    • Option 4: Research and Gathering. You may spend this time finding and documenting resources to add to your project.
    • Option 5: Other? You may spend this time working on other tasks you need to accomplish.

Be sure to tell your teacher what you will be working on today.

    Project Progress

    • Emphasize that only completed and edited files should be uploaded to their final self-portrait. SWD: Check in with students to assess their progress; provide specific feedback about what they have accomplished and what needs to be completed for homework.

    Closing

Look over your planning documents, especially your Self-Portrait Checklist.

    • Have you finished all chapters and artifacts? If not, what is your plan to finish them before the next lesson?

    Open Notebook

Share your response with your teacher.

    Final File Preparation

    • The next few lessons will be complicated as students learn to upload their files and build their final self-portrait. The more prepared they are in advance, the more smoothly the lessons will go.

    Homework

Finish up any loose ends, making sure all your files are ready to go.

    • Continue creating, editing, and organizing your chapters and your artifacts.
    • Log your progress in your Planning Calendar.
