    HS+ Health, Fitness and English (2020)

    Overview

    This theme-based English course integrates reading, writing, listening, speaking, and critical thinking skills around assignments and activities focusing on health and fitness. This competency-based class allows students to work at their own pace, exit at a level appropriate to demonstrated skills and knowledge, and earn high school credits in English, Health, Fitness and/or electives.

    This competency-based class allows students to work at their own pace, exit at a level appropriate to demonstrated skills and knowledge, and earn high school credits in English, Health, Fitness and/or electives.

    Culturally Responsive Approach

    This course was intentionally developed to align with the Washington State Board for Community and Technical College’s vision, mission, values and strategic plan.  The Culturally Responsive Scorecard, developed by NYU Steinhardt, was a guiding document in the development of this course. Sincere efforts were made to develop culturally responsive curriculum that is inclusive of all students, with particular emphasis on highlighting the histories, experiences, and strengths of historically underserved populations.  Faculty planning to teach this course should review modules thoroughly prior to presenting material to students.  The HS+ Instructor Resource Guide provides resources and strategies that may be a useful starting place for faculty to address gaps in knowledge and confidence. 

    Course Outcomes

    • Understand the various dimensions of wellness and demonstrate its role in students’ lives. 
    • Apply personal information and set goals to develop a plan to improve or manage physical, mental, or social well being
    • Analyze the role of food in one or more of the dimensions of wellness
    • Assess food for it nutritional value using the framework of level of processing
    • Analyze barriers to healthy eating and resources for healthy eating in your community.
    • Define personal boundaries in a variety of relationships and understand strategies, barriers, and resources for setting boundaries
    • Identify, summarize, and analyze information about a health topic affecting your community.
    • Compare and contrast different solutions to a situation of injustice
    • Analyze the impact of a particular health issue in your community and suggest possible solutions.
    • Collaborate with and build upon the ideas of others in order to produce original analysis.
    • Support original analysis and thinking with evidence drawn from a variety of media including articles, short videos, and audio recordings.
    • Effectively summarize content from a variety of media including articles, short videos, and audio recordings.

    College and Career Readiness Standards

    Throughout the course students demonstrate the following:

    Reading

    • Reading anchor standard 6: Assess how point of view or purpose shapes the content and style of a text.
    • Reading anchor standard 8: Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, including the validity of the reasoning as well as the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence.
    • Reading anchor standard 10: Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.

    Writing

    • Writing Anchor Standard 2:   Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.
    • Writing anchor standard 5: Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.
    • Writing anchor standard 6: Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others.
    • Writing anchor standard 9: Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

    Speaking and Listening

    Speaking and Listening anchor standard 1: Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
