Anatomy of stomach
Anatomy of stomach
Usually “J” shaped
Left side, anterior to the spleen
Temporary storage tank – chemical breakdown of protein begins
Food converted to creamy paste – chyme
Major regions
Cardiac region (or) Cardia – surrounds the cardiac orifice
Fundus – dome shaped
Body – mid portion of stomach
Pyloric region
Superior pyloric antrum
Narrow pyloric canal
And ends in Pylorous
Convex region – greater curvature
Concave region – lesser curvature
From curvature two mesenteries
Lesser omentum – runs liver to lesser curvature
Greater omentum – from greater curvature to small intestine
Microscopic anatomy
Stomach has four layers
Lining of stomach mucosa – simple columnar epithelium – goblet cell lining is dotted with millions of deep gastric pits which leads to gastric glands
Glands – have a variety of secretory cells
Mucous neck cell – produce mucous
Parietal (Oxyntic) Cells – secrete Hcl & Intrinsic factors.
Chief (or) Zymogenic cells – produce pepsinogen
Entero endocrine cells – a variety of hormone or hormone like
