Remote Learning Plan: Add, Subtract, and Multiply Decimals 6th Grade

    Overview

This Remote Learning Plan was created by Sarah Feik in collaboration with Craig Hicks and Tyler Cronin as part of the 2020 ESU-NDE Remote Learning Plan Project. Educators worked with coaches to create Remote Learning Plans as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The attached Remote Learning Plan is designed for 6th grade Math students. Students will learn how to add, subtract, and multiply decimals. This Remote Learning Plan addresses the following NDE Standard: MA6.1.2.d and MA6.1.2.e

It is expected that this Remote Learning Plan will take students 45 minutes to complete.

Instruction: Start the lesson by providing the students with links to both EdPuzzle videos. The videos provide instructions on how to work problems that involve adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals. Each video provides 4-6 questions embedded for them to answer as they are viewing. The settings on the videos do not allow students to skip questions to ensure they view the entire video.

Process: There is a short 5 question Google Form that students can use as a quick check for understanding of the lesson before moving onto the Practice portion of the lesson. The Form will force you to make a copy so you can view your own student's responses.

Practice: Students must complete the 8 question worksheet provided in the ‘Must Do’ section. They can choose to do so either on their devices or by printing off a paper copy. Once they have the ‘Must Do’ completed, they can choose 1 of the ‘Can Do’ IXL’s to complete or any of the soccer/basketball games. The games are free and do not need an account. Students may choose to skip the ‘Can Do’ section and move onto the Product portion if you feel the concept has been grasped fully.

Product: Students will go back through the 8 question worksheet and pick 1 problem record themselves showing how they solved that particular problem. Please check with them beforehand that they indeed got the question correct before recording. Some options to record themselves are PhotoBooth or Flipgrid. If they are not comfortable recording themselves, they can choose to come up with their own real-world problem.
