Jim Crow Laws/Segregation Introduction

Jim Crow Laws/Segregation Introduction

Overview

This gives an overview and some basic background knowledge of segragation and the Jim Crow Laws. This is an interactive lesson. In the teacher view you will find instructions. This is meant to build up knowledge before beginning a unit in English class that discusses these topics.

Day One Introduction

First, students will look at the PowerPoint. They will do stop and jots with each picure. Once all pictures have been shown ask, "What do all these photos and items have in common? What do they represent?"

Give students time to turn and talk and discuss. Walk around the room and guide thinking as needed.

Once they have discussed have a whole group discussion. *They need to know these terms for the poem that goes with the first Module of WW*

Students will then read an article about Jim Crow Laws with their tables. I have added that to another section for easy navigation. They only need to read the Jim Crow Law section.

Students will end the day by looking at the image in the third section, again for easy navigation. They will write in their reflective journals by answering the following questions:

1. How does the photo connect to what we learned about today?

2. How does it make you feel? Why?
