    Overview

    Over the next two lessons, you will complete the culminating assessment for this unit. You'll read text and answer questions that will reflect your reading comprehension.

    Over the next two lessons, students will complete the culminating assessment for this unit.

    In this lesson, students will read text and answer questions that reflect their reading comprehension. Some questions will ask students to select from a group of answers supplied. Other questions will ask students to construct their own answers and write them in the space provided.

    Preparation

    • Read the lesson and student content.
    • Anticipate student difficulties and identify the differentiation options you will choose for working with your students.
    • Review the Culminating Assessment Unit Overview, found in Teacher Support, prior to this lesson.
    • If you have students on an IEP or other accommodations, check to see whether they receive extended time or need an alternative test setting. Work with the professional supporting SWDs to make sure student needs are met.

    Task 1: Introduction to Reading Assessment

    Today, you will read a passage and answer questions to show how much you know. Think about everything you've learned in the last three lessons in this unit.

    Prior to answering the questions, be sure to read the instructions for each part of the assessment. After responding to all of the items in the assessment, review your work to make sure you have addressed the questions completely.

    • In this lesson, students will take the reading portion of the assessment unit.

    • Review the assessment and ensure that students have a clear understanding of what is expected and the time frame required.

    • Remind students to review their work for accuracy.

    Task 2: Reading Assessment

    • Follow your teacher's instructions and start the assessment.
    • Tell students that they will have 45–55 minutes to complete the assessment (this will need to be adjusted according to the length of your class period). Put the start and end time on the board for students to see.

    • Direct students to start the reading portion of the culminating assessment.

    • Answer any questions that are not of a substantive nature.

    • Do a quick check-in to ensure that students understand what they need to do.

    • Remind students when half their time is up.

    • Remind students to check their work for accuracy.

    • If students finish before time is up, direct them to other activities.

    Share your ideas with the class.

    • Explain to students that they have completed the reading portion of their culminating assessment.

    • If time permits, give students the opportunity to discuss what was easy and what was challenging about the assessment. Use their comments to guide instruction during the next culminating assessment unit.

    • An alternative to this task is to refer students to More to Explore if they finish early.
