    Using this Course

    Using this Course

    Overview

In this lesson, students will explore the uses of the digital course in the classroom and consider how it will help them as learners this year.

    Preparation

    • Read the lesson and student content.
    • Anticipate student difficulties and identify the differentiation options you will choose for working with your students.
    • Plan to demonstrate the aspects of the course that will be most useful to your class.

    Introductory Demonstration

    • Your students will have a wide range of experience with the kinds of technology you will be using this year; some will be very comfortable, while for others the tablet and its programs will present a challenge.
    • You can demonstrate the functionality of the Notebook, sharing, More to Explore, etc.
    • Be sure to allow plenty of time for questions.
      • SWD: Some students with disabilities may struggle to listen and follow along simultaneously during the demonstration. To allow students to focus on listening skills during this task, you can provide a list of key terms and steps for repeated actions/tasks to refer to later.
      • ELL: Be sure that ELLs are able to follow the explanation that you provide. Ask questions during your explanation to check for understanding.

    Opening

To get you started thinking about how you will use this digital course throughout this year, your teacher will demonstrate the features that will be most important in your class.

As you watch and listen, think about the following questions.

    • How is this similar to or different from what you’ve done before in school?
    • What are the benefits of using this kind of technology in the classroom?
    • Do any challenges come to mind?

    Demonstration Response

    • Encourage students to write down whatever thoughts they have in response to these questions. You can allow them a minute before writing to talk to the person sitting next to them. Call on a few students to share their responses.
      • SWD: Some students with disabilities may be reluctant to contribute. However, they can offer an important perspective on this topic. Encourage these students to share with the rest of the class.
      • ELL: When ELLs turn to a partner, allow them to use their primary language if they are paired with a student who speaks the same language.
    • Try to hear from as many students as possible, and be sure to record some challenges as well as benefits.
    • You can track student responses to the second and third questions on a T-shaped chart at the front of the room.

    Work Time

Before discussing as a class, take a few minutes to write down some thoughts in response to the questions you considered.

    • How is this similar to or different from what you’ve done before in school?
    • What are the benefits of using this kind of technology in the classroom?
    • Are there any challenges that come to mind?

    Open Notebook

When you are finished writing, share your responses with the class.

    Learning Survey

    • The results of this survey can be used to help you understand individual students, of course, but you can also use them to think about your class as a whole.

    Work Time

As your year begins, it’s important to let your teacher know more about you as a student and learner. Take some time to independently complete this Learning Survey, and then answer the question below.

    • What can you tell me about yourself as a learner that will help me teach you better this year?

    Open Notebook

When you finish, share your answer with your teacher.

    Learning Survey Discussion

    • Facilitate a discussion about how the Learning Survey can help foster a learning partnership.

    Work Time

Reflect with your class on the Learning Survey.

    • What lessons can you, your teacher, and your classmates learn about how best to move forward through the year?

    Hopes and Worries Reflection

    • This quick reflection will help you get a sense of each student's readiness for the school year.
      • ELL: Make sure that ELLs have access to a bilingual dictionary as well as monolingual dictionaries in English and their primary language. Using good dictionaries is very important in building their knowledge of the language and their vocabulary.

    Closing

Take a few minutes to reflect on what you’ve seen and done today, and to think about the upcoming year. What are your hopes and fears? Write a short note to your teacher, completing the following prompts.

    • This year, I hope that . . .
    • This year, I worry that . . .

    Open Notebook

    Digital Course Exploration

    • Encourage your students to spend time becoming familiar with the features of the tablet.
    • Decide if you ultimately want students to share these discoveries with you and the class either in writing or verbally.

    Homework

Take some time to explore the digital course.

    • Note any questions you may have about the digital course.
