    Overview

    This lesson spans multiple days. Students will watch three videos about Booker T. Washington in order to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using a video to present information on Booker T. Washington.

    Day 1 Task 1

    • Students will discuss in groups the information that was presented about Booker T. Washington in his autobiography, Up From Slavery.  Option to use a collaborative web tool such as Padlet to compile information gleaned about Washington from the reading of his biography. 
    • In groups, students will watch four videos regarding Washington.  While watching, students will identify and discuss new information presented in each video. Option to record new information digitally for individual or collaborative use.
    • Students will generate their own discussion questions based from the videos, to be used in tomorrow’s fishbowl discussion.  Option to generate questions in a web tool such as Padlet.
    • We will discuss in groups the information that was presented about Booker T. Washington in his autobiography, Up From Slavery.  
    • In groups, we will watch four videos regarding Washington.  While watching, identify and discuss new information presented in each video. 
    • We will generate our own discussion questions based from the videos, to be used in tomorrow’s fishbowl discussion.  

    Day 2 Task 2

    • Students will participate in a fishbowl discussion activity. The teacher should use the questions listed below and devise additional questions from content in the videos.
    • Students will answer the following questions using evidence from the autobiography and videos as their support:

    o   Why did many people consider Booker T. Washington one of the most influential African Americans of his time?
    o   How did Booker T. Washington improve the lives of African American students at Tuskegee Institute?
    o   What caused Booker T. Washington to receive criticism from his opponents?
    o   Why did Booker T. Washington believe that students at Tuskegee Institute should focus on getting a vocational education?
    o   What were Booker T. Washington and General Armstrong’s views on education?o   What new information was learned while watching the videos?
    o   What messages does each speaker convey in the videos about Booker T. Washington?
    o   What information is clarified in the videos about Booker T. Washington and his views on education?

    • Students will discuss their questions from yesterday. Student-generated questions may be shared to a collaborative web tool such as Padlet.
    • Option to use a web tool for a back channel during the fishbowl discussion.
    • We will participate in a fishbowl discussion activity.
    • We will answer the following questions using evidence from the autobiography and videos as our support:

    o   Why did many people consider Booker T. Washington one of the most influential African Americans of his time?
    o   How did Booker T. Washington improve the lives of African American students at Tuskegee Institute?
    o   What caused Booker T. Washington to receive criticism from his opponents?
    o   Why did Booker T. Washington believe that students at Tuskegee Institute should focus on getting a vocational education?
    o   What were Booker T. Washington and General Armstrong’s views on education?o   What new information was learned while watching the videos?
    o   What messages does each speaker convey in the videos about Booker T. Washington?

    • We will discuss their questions from yesterday.

    Day 2 Task 3

    • The teacher will clarify any misconceptions about the information presented in the videos.
    • Students will generate a list of the advantages/disadvantages of watching a video as opposed to reading a text about Booker T. Washington. Option to share advantages and disadvantages to a collaborative document or web tool such as Padlet.
    • Advantages:

    o   Historians conducted research about Booker T. Washington.
    o   The videos are current with real people speaking about what they know about Booker T Washington.
    o   The videos allow other people to give different viewpoints on one person.

    • Disadvantages:

    o   Students only hear the views of selected people about Booker T. Washington.
    o   There are not any opposing viewpoints about Booker T. Washington.
    o   The information presented about Booker T. Washington might not be supported by facts.
    o   The information could be biased.
    o   The information could be based on others’ opinions.
    o   Students do not have the written text to cite evidence.

    • We will generate a list of the advantages/disadvantages of watching a video as opposed to reading a text about Booker T. Washington. 

    Day 3 Task 4

    • Students will write a narrative based on the video accounts, using relevant descriptive details to describe the events that took place surrounding Booker T. Washington.  Students should address the essential question: How can taking a stand help to develop a personal belief system?
    • Students will use narrative techniques in their writing such as description and reflection to further develop the key events introduced in the video.
    • Students will use sensory language to capture the experiences and events from the video.
    • Students will receive some guidance from the teacher to develop and strengthen their writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, and rewriting to focus on the purpose and audience.
    • We will write a narrative based on the video accounts, using relevant descriptive details to describe the events that took place surrounding Booker T. Washington.  Your narrative should address the essential question: How can taking a stand help to develop a personal belief system?
    • We will use narrative techniques in our writing such as description and reflection to further develop the key events introduced in the video.
    • We will use sensory language to capture the experiences and events from the video.

    Day 3 Task 5

    • Students will peer edit their work before producing a final product.  Option for commenting in a collaborative document for this activity.
    • Students should produce and publish their writing. Option for students to publish digitally using a word processing program.
    • We will peer edit their work before producing a final product.
