Sociology Nature of Deviance and Crime documentary project
Overview
This lesson deals with the nature of deviance through documentaries done through the PBS series Frontline or the documentary series Real Stories.
Students will need to review the nature of deviance and crime, apply key concepts and terms that deal with deviance and crime, and apply those concepts to a film clip that is school appropriate and exemplifies those concepts.
Students will be the faciliators of a film study of that clip and will lead discussions about the aspects of the film clip and analysis.

Directions: View the PBS Documentary called the perfect crime and reflect on the sociological questions surrounding the actions of Leopold and Loeb.
- Describe the background of Leopold. His family, education, wealth that the family had.
2. Describe the background of Loeb. His family, education, wealth of the family, his childhood.
3. How and when did Leopold and Loeb meet?
4. Who do you believe was the leader of the pair? Leopold or Loeb?
5. Were the pair wealth and intelligent? IN what ways were the wealthy and/ or intelligent?
6. Why did they want to commit the act of Murder? Who did they choose as their victim?
7. How did they plan the murder? Why did they believe they could get away with it?
8. How were they caught and arrested? Who Confessed? Did they plead guilty and why?
9. What was the argument that Clarence Darrow ( Their Defense Attorney) said in the sentencing phase to try to avoid the death penalty?
10. What was their sentence? And what happened to Leopold and Loeb in prison> Were they freed or died in prison?
11. Do you believe in the argument of clarence darrow that the boys were maladjusted because of their spoiled and dysfunctional upbringing and their affluent lifestyle?
12. What does this case study say about the nature of crime and punishment? Can you be rich, affluent, intelligent and still socially deviant? Do you believe they received a just and proper punishment? Why?
