    Overview

    How often do you say the word "hello" or "hey"?  These words are used VERY often.  In this seminar you will learn these words in Spanish and you will be able to use them just as often to greet someone and to say your farewells.

    Engage

    Introductory warm-up activity.

    Learning to speak a new language can be really exciting.  The words "hello" and "goodbye" are used so often and can be used in different situations to start up a new conversation or make new friends! Watch this short video about greetings. Jot down important terms that you recognize and make a separate list for terms that seem new.

    Read this informational sheet to familiarize yourself with basic vocabulary about greetings. As you listen to the video and work on your padelt do you hear these words? Can you say them correctly?

    Watch this informational video and think about how often do you say the word "hello" or "hey"?  These words are used VERY often. Jot down the words you hear in this video that sound like greetings. Do you think they will be in your vocabulary list?

    Using this Quizlet practice the vocabulary words with as many of the different strategies and tools that are offered. Can you think of other ways that you can learn about saying these new words and being able to greet someone in another language?

    Based on what you learned in the Explore and Engage sections of this Seminar, answer the following prompt:

    You have learned some of the most basic Spanish.  What made you curious today or what you may learn in the future of this course?

    Now it is time to self check how much you have learned about the words that make up basic greetings in Spanish.  If you do not know as much as you thought, go back to the “Explore” section of this seminar and reread, rewatch, or redo the activities listed.  See your facilitator if you have questions.

    This is a task or project where you can show what you know.

    This assignment will be an opportunity for you to present information, concepts and ideas to inform, explain, persuade or narrate on a variety of topics using various media and adapting to audiences of listeners, readers or viewers.

    Say "hello" and "goodbye" in Spanish to at least 3 different people in your community, school, or home.  You must record these and submit them as proof of your ability to communicate in Spanish to say "hello" and "goodbye."  A total of 6 Spanish words should be said (3 "hello" and 3 "goodbye") with no notes or assistance. You may submit the videos separately or put them together in one video, a powerpoint, on youtube, or other media of choice to submit them.

    1. Write a reflection essay answering the following questions:

    • In what ways have you improved in your ability and knowledge of saying hello and goodbye in Spanish?

    • What brought about those improvements?

    • What was your biggest accomplishment in the seminar?
