    Use Text Features to Demonstrate Mastery of Text

    Overview

    This seminar will help you understand how to use text features to reach a mastery level of understanding of an article, text, or other printed item. You will be looking at effective ways to gather information or data from text features, as well as the importance of their accuracy, which are to important “habits of mind.”  You will also have the opportunity to create, watch, and read materials that will deepen your understanding of text features, and how they improve comprehension for you the reader.

    Introductory warm-up activity.

    To begin this seminar, you will be completing a scavenger hunt of the items listed on the linked page below the directions. Using your technology and the list, you will find examples of each of the text features from the web. As you locate the text features, you can make a list of links, or you can take screen shots and create a group of slides. Share your findings with your facilitator.

    Directions:

    This will be a time for pairing and sharing. Take your findings from the scavenger hunt in the Engage portion of the seminar and choose a learner or two to share your findings with. Have a collaborative discussion with your partner or group, talking about how these text features would help you better comprehend text.

    Now it is time to self-check how much you have learned about the this topic.  If you do not know as much as you thought, go back to the “Explore” section of this seminar and reread, rewatch, or redo the activities listed.  See your facilitator if you have questions.

Your approach should be to create a presentation that could be shown to a learner that has not yet studied text features.  Make sure your examples and explanations are direct and clear.
