    Locating Information Using Text Features

    Locating Information Using Text Features

    Overview

Your focus in this seminar will be on using text features to locate and better understand information.  These “habits of mind,” gathering data, and the importance of accuracy, will be connected throughout the seminar. You will have the opportunity to read, watch, listen, and create items that will lead to an effective understanding of how text features are used in various forms to deepen understanding.

    Standards

    CC.1.2.3.E
Use text features and search tools to locate and interpret information.

    Engage

    Introductory warm-up activity.

Once you are done reading these directions, you will be going to the linked quizlet site found below.  First go to the quizlet Nonfiction Text Features link and review the flash cards.  If you feel confident, proceed to the test tab on Quizlet and take the test, then show the facilitator your results (face to face or screen shot shared). If you feel you require further practice, go to the learn tab on Quizlet before taking the test. Your sequence to complete this Engage activity should either be: flashcards to test or flashcards to learn to test on Quizlet link.

    Locating Information Flashcards

    Explore

Please choose to read or watch the linked content below focusing on text features. When you complete your choice of Read or Watch, please create a set of 10 flashcards for text features.  Feel free to choose whatever 10 examples you would like, as we have seen more than 10 examples over the last seminar to this one. Strive to make flashcards that could be used by you to review or another learner to deepen understanding.

    Read

    Watch

    Do

As you read, Text Features by: Mrs. Cabrera, your focus should be how these text features help you locate or understand information better.

As you  watch, Text Features and Graphic Sources, your focus should be how these text features help you locate or understand information better.

Create a set of 10 flashcards that another learner could use to better understand some of the text features discussed in this or the previous seminar. What the flashcards look like is up to you.  For example, word side / definition side or another method is you might choose.

    Explain

Discuss your ideas / opinions / understandings.

    Directions:

During this part of the seminar, you will be expected to give a 1-2 minute extemporaneous speech.  Extemporaneous means without preparation; this should not be a problem as you have had time to learn and review the importance of text features. Your speech will explain to one learner, a small group, or an entire class how one can use text features to gather important information.  Refer to any other helpful materials used in this or the last seminar.

    Evaluate

Now it is time to self-check how much you have learned about the this topic.  If you do not know as much as you thought, go back to the “Explore” section of this seminar and reread, rewatch, or redo the activities listed.  See your facilitator if you have questions.

There are 16 questions that you will need to complete.  Once at the Quizlet page, click “test” and complete the questions. Be sure to show your facilitator your score out of 16.

    Elaborate

This is a task or project where you can show what you know.

    Directions:

To complete the elaborate section you will be creating a short non-fiction mini-book. Choose a topic and create a mini-book that uses your choice of text features to teach a fellow learner about your topic.  This mini-book should include between 5-10 examples of text features, and the more text features used, the better.

    Mini-Book Rubric

A familiar review (w/images) which might help.

    • The above link can be used for visual examples of what you might want the pages of your mini-book to look like.

    Express

Complete this wrap-up activity where you reflect on your learning.

Create a reflective essay. In your essay talk about text features you find useful, and ones you find less useful in your pursuit of comprehension. See the Essay Rubric to understand expectations.
