    Career Resources List Compilation

    Overview

Students, particularly international graduate students, often do not know all the details of the field they have chosen to study and the resources available therein. In addition, they when they begin graduate school, they must adjust to the nature of the Western model where knowledge is created and shared within the field of study in a critical-thinking based model.  The best way for them to truly enter the conversation of knowledge is to jump in and experience the information as fully as they can.  Journals, associations and trade publications all provide a wealth of information - much of it free to students - for them to explore and think through how they want to make a contribution.

    Build Knowledge of the Field

Provide the following worksheet to your students.  Some ways to complete it might be individually or in groups if the students are in the same field.  The goal is to help students understand their chosen field and the career paths within it.  It is crucial that the students annotate each entry, not just find the resource.  Encourage them to write a few sentences on what they learn about each source.  This can be homework or classwork.  If done in class, fascinating discussions will ensue about the meaning of work and knowledge and research.

For this assignment, you will do some research in your field of study - and toward the career path you wish to enter when you finish graduate school. The point is to research the ways in which knowledge is generated and shared with other professionals. How does the field progress into the future? How can you hope to join the conversation and/or the body of inquiry in the field? Where can you go to find information about finding a job in your field? The answer is to do research on the field itself: find professional organizations, journals, and the people who are currently doing the work you hope to do in the future.  Find the information and then write some notes – annotations about each answer.

Here are some taks to complete and questions you must answer:

    1. Find two journals in your field.  Name them and describe what they are, what they study, and why they are useful.

    2. Find two organizations in your field that have conferences or meetings to discuss relevant items. How often to they meet? What do they discuss? How do they invite people?

    3. Find a biography on two or more professionals in your field who you admire.

    4. If there are other ways of making knowledge and sharing it in your field of inquiry, then find them and describe them.
