    Introduction to Irony

    Overview

    Students will be introduced to irony with a focus on the three types of irony:  verbal, situational, and dramatic.  

    RL 8.4  Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies or allusions to other texts.

    Students will review the definitions of the three types of irony.  

    After viewing examples and taking notes, they will view three videos:  verbal irony, situational irony, and dramatic irony.

    Students will get a copy of the lyrics to the song "Ironic" by Alanis Morissette.  

    They will listen to the song a few times.and highlight examples of irony. 

    Students will then work with a partner to share and discuss.  

    Next, students will type their own song lyrics using the song "Ironic" as a template portraying examples of irony.

    Students will then share with the class.  

    During presentations, students will highlight examples of irony using classmates' lyrics.

    Listen to words from song "Ironic" by Alanis Morissette and highlight examples of irony.

    Students will be given a handout with the lyrics to the song "Ironic" by Alanis Morissette.  They will listen to the song a few times and highlight examples of irony.

    Choose a partner and discuss highlighted examples of irony.

    Students will choose a partner to work with and discuss their highlighted examples of situational irony.  

    Choose a partner, share examples of situational irony and discuss.  

    Write song lyrics with all three types of irony.

    Students will work with a partner to write their own song lyrics using the song "Ironic" as a template.  They will use examples of situational irony in their lyrics.  

    In your literacy spiral, you and your partner will write your own song lyrics using the song "Ironic" as a template.  You will use examples of situational irony in your lyrics.  

    Type lyrics and be prepared to share with the class.

    Students will share their lyrics with the class. 

    Type your lyrics and be prepared to share with the class.  Make sure you have a title.  

    Identify irony in classmates' lyrics.

    Students will choose one presenting group.  They will identify examples of irony as the group is presenting.  Groups should have extra copies of their lyrics to pass out to students.
