This video takes a deep look at something most students are just taking for granted and assuming unimportant - units. I used this video with my adult education students when we were exploring WHY we have to multiply before we add and subtract in an expression. This was just one piece that led them to understand that when we multiply, we are converting units. Units must be converted before they are added together. For example, 3 individual pastries of one flavor, and 8 individual pastries in each of two boxes of another flavor could look like this: 3 + 8 x 2 . I must multiply 8 x 2 to find out how many individual pastries I have of the first flavor before I add it to the other flavor. My unit is INDIVIDUAL PASTRIES.
My class enjoyed this video!
