This large pop-up book with foldouts contains a 3D model of an active galaxy with jets that pops up out of the center. Active galaxies, a major scientific target for the GLAST mission (renamed Fermi in 2008),contain super-massive black holes at their cores, and sometimes emit jets of particles and light. One foldout contains explanatory information for the parts of the galaxy depicted in the central pop-up, as well as a glossary, while the other contains a classroom activity, the "Tasty Active Galaxy." The back of the book features a cartoon story: "How the Galaxy Got Its Jets." (less)

Advanced Algebra II (CA Textbook)

Advanced Algebra II provides three complementary resources for teachers and students that ... (more)

Advanced Algebra II provides three complementary resources for teachers and students that combine to provide a friendly, easy-to-understand explanation of Algebra II concepts. The main text, "Activities and Homework", consists of a series of worksheets for both in-class group work as well as homework assignments. The concepts behind those activities are described in detail in the "Conceptual Explanations" text. The third book, the "Teacher's Guide", provides instructors with guides and suggestions for presenting these materials. Over a period of time, I have developed a set of in-class assignments, homeworks, and lesson plans, that work for me and for other people who have tried them. If I give you the in-class assignments and the homeworks, but not the lesson plans, you only have ⅔ of the story; and it may not make sense without the other third. So instead, I am giving you everything: the in-class assignments and the homeworks (the Homework and Activities book), the detailed explanations of all the concepts (the Conceptual Explanations book), and the lesson plans (the Teacher's Guide). Once you read them over, you will know exactly what I have done. This digital textbook was reviewed for its alignment with California content standards. (less)

The Adventure of Echo the Bat

This pop-up book was designed for K-4 students to introduce them to ... (more)

This pop-up book was designed for K-4 students to introduce them to remote sensing. By following Echo's journey through Arizona they become more familiar with map use and remote sensing images. After completing this book, children ages 5-6 should be able to distinguish between what a satellite sees and what Echo sees, be able to identify patterns and color in the satellite image and compare these to what Echo sees, and begin to extend the concept that texture is not only how something feels but is also how something looks. Older children (ages 7-9) should begin to describe what the satellite is seeing by just looking at the satellite view and they should also be able to describe the location of patterns and colors (i.e., square patterns of irrigated crops are near rivers and green forests are on top of mountains) and make more elaborate observations about texture in the satellite images. A set of activities reinforce the four basic themes or concepts fundamental to interpreting satellite imagery: perspective, shape and pattern, color, and texture. (less)

This interactive adventure engages children in a story-based scenario that emphasizes concepts of remote sensing and how NASA scientists use satellite imagery to better understand the Earth's environmental changes. It introduces students to Earth science concepts, beginning with classifying objects in satellite images by shape, color and texture, building a foundation for interpreting and understanding remote sensing. The story is set in New York City, chosen for its size, diversity and the visibility of prominent features in satellite imagery. Lesson plans to accompany the adventure are in development. Recommended for: children ages 5-10. (less)

This picture book is designed to introduce children to the Earth's atmosphere and its importance to life on Earth. It also introduces how the addition of new gases (e.g., ozone) contributes to changing the quality of air we breathe. With an understanding of how our atmosphere works, we can begin to understand how our activities may be contributing to some of those changes in air quality. The back cover includes a short demo/activity called Making a Gas You Can’t See (Carbon Dioxide). (less)

In this web-based, interactive story, Tutangiaq (Too-tang-geye-ack - nicknamed 2T), a Canada Goose, flies across Alaska looking for his family. As he flies, he tells children about the fascinating 49th state. Children learn how Alaska was purchased from the Russians, and other facts about the state. They can also compare the size of Alaska to other states. 2T takes a flight across the volcanic chain in Alaska and helps the students to interactively explore how scientists monitor volcanoes from satellite images in near-real time. At the coast, the bird also meets his Walrus friend who shows him how the sea ice edge has receded and gives an example of an adverse effect on marine life. Finally, 2T arrives in Fairbanks where children use satellite imagery to help 2T find and unite with his family. (less)
