This lesson presents an overview of ecosystems of a forest. Upon completion of this unit students will know the dynamics of forestry management. This represents a portion of the Introduction to Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources (AFNR) series in Nebraska middle and high school agricultural education.

In partnership with the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources, the NC Forestry Association, and the Weyerhaeuser Corporation, agricultural education students will understand sustainable forestry practices and the forestry industry. Students will explore the pertinence and value of the forestry industry in North Carolina, while also learning skills that are used in today’s forestry industry. The agricultural education curriculum will also lead students through the exploration of forest ecology, tree identification, and the many practices involved with sustainable forestry and the forestry careers.

What does forestry even mean? Well, what it means has changed a lot over time. As the public’s perception of forestry has changed so has the profession. The 1944 and 1958 Society of American Foresters (SAF) Dictionary of Forestry, defined forestry as “the scientific management of forests for the continuous production of goods and services.” Compare that to the most recent 2018 SAF Dictionary of Forestry which defines forestry as:
“the profession embracing the science, art and practice of creating, managing using, and conserving forests and associated resources for human benefit and in a sustainable manner to meet desired goals, needs and values -note the broad field of forestry consists of those biological , quantitative, managerial, and social sciences that are applied to forest management and conservation; it includes specialized fields such as agroforestry, urban forestry, industrial forestry, nonindustrial forestry, and wilderness and recreation forestry.”

As you can read, the profession has changed over time and now encompasses a variety of disciplines all adapted to meet desired goals, needs and values. This text is not comprehensive of all the disciplines but an introduction to them. Additionally, as this is an Introduction to Forestry, the set of readings was selected to be engaging and create interest and not be an end. It is hoped that this sampling of the topics will generate additional interest in the profession and the broad field of forestry and encourage you to investigate further.

This open access book applies for the first time emerging concepts of socioeconomics to analyse an economic sector, namely agriculture. It considers the rational choices of all actors in the system (just as agricultural economists do) and their cultural preferences and constraints (just as rural sociologists do). Socioeconomic concepts are subsequently used to structure agricultural issues with regard to the three governance mechanisms (hierarchy, markets, and cooperation), and different agricultural systems are presented and compared. The book will be of interest to social scientists with various backgrounds, and seeks to break down the barriers of single-disciplinary thinking.

Students take notes and read articles about how life changed for humans because of the introduction of agriculture.  Students play “MasterMind” using the dates of significant changes in agriculture and complete a worksheet while researching historical events that have impacted agriculture.

In this seventh grade science Atmosphere and Weather Unit, students will explore the atmosphere, air and water quality, the water cycle, the greenhouse effect, global warming, climate change, and human-environment interaction through a number of experiments, interactive webquests and projects. They will be exposed to the STEM practices behind growing and agriculture in a hands-on, experiential and experimental life science growing project. They will create terrariums in two-liter soda bottles and will focus on the importance of understanding meteorology and the cycling of water and gasses in and out of the Earth and atmosphere in order to effectively plan, grow and harvest.

Students will write a daily response to an agriculture news story and make connections to thier community and predict the impact of the event on the agriculture industry.  Reading current agriculture news will help students be more informed consumers while also helping them to connect content learned in agriculture class to real-world events and applications. This unit covers different types of loans that agricultural producers commonly use in the business of farming and ranching. It explains some key terms that are important to understand, and provides the equations and framework for setting up loans for short-term (operating loans and lines of credit) as well as amortized loans (equal principal payment loans and equal total payment loans).

In this introduction to biotechnology's use in agriculture, learners will discuss history of the topic, model the fermentation process, and extract DNA in a lab activity.
